I have a small home roaster (about 4oz per roast). Any tips, tricks, suggestions, warnings? Always wondering what might be worth trying. Thanks

I use a little air powered freshroast. I prefer a lighter roast and dry process beans. SweetMarias has always had a great offering and decent prices.
That’s probably of little benefit or groundbreaking but enjoy! Can’t beat fresh beans

Freshy roasting coffee smells like crap. Only did it inside the house once.
With any new bean I roast just past the first crack. If it's too sour at this light roast I'll make a 2nd batch roasting it all the way to the 2nd crack and stopping when I hear the first hints of 2nd crack noting the time from first crack to 2nd crack. From there I will experiment with the roasting time between first and 2nd crack to find where I find the flavor most palatable. Most of my favorite coffees tend the be the ones that taste the best just past the first crack. That's how I experiment. Not sure how others do it.

DeoreDX and RaginCajunz mirror my experiences. Have used Sweet Maria's for a long time and I also use a Fresh Roaster. Thx for the input.

I have Gene Cafe roaster, which I got from Sweet Maria's, that I have been using for about 4 years. It is expensive, but has been great to use. You get very consistent roasts once you figure out the roast level that you like.
I typically get the green beans from Sweet Maria's or HomeRoastCoffee.com. Both have great prices.

I have a fresh roast. I love this little roaster with the ext hopper. Roasted inside once and never again. I wish i could roast a pound at a time. I have been purchasing bean from Burmancoffee. Its a fun hobby for me as i get older. I think I am on my 15th pound, light to dark and also blending beans. You will find what you like eventually.

How is this possible? I remember smells from my childhood when the scent of roasting Community Coffee from that riverside facility near the bridge was AMAZING. Were they not freshly roasting coffee?

I enjoy the aroma. My vent hood handles the light roasts just fine. Granted it’s a small capacity and I’m not getting it smoky dark. It smells more outside than inside
