Has anyone ever attended the EAA Airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin? Good experience if so? Looking to travel north this summer to cooler temperatures and this event caught my eye.

With around 10,000 planes flying in to a smaller airport that week and many more driving in, wondering if it’s too crowded to be enjoyable. Looking at going this year and every hotel anywhere close is already booked up. The ones left are a town or two away, are lower tier places at $550+ a night.

Looks like most of the advanced military aircraft are there as well as Experimental aircraft.

quote:

In 1971, the EAA airshow at Oshkosh brought in 600 planes and 31,653 movements. Today AirVenture brings in more than 10,000 airplanes. Special air traffic procedures are used to ensure safe, coordinated operations.

Massive clusterfrick for traffic and you don't even need tickets to enjoy the show but Osh Vegas is a fun little town. I would recommend staying in Appleton since they have a better selection of hotels.

That’s was my worry. Lots of small roads heading in and out.

Same advice I got when going to Green Bay.

Went last year and it was a blast. Go for the air shows. That’s the best you’ll get out of it. Later in the week is when the best shows/demos are.

In the down time, you’ll have plenty of aircraft to see. If you’re pilot savvy, I recommend the seminars and talks.

When youre not at the show, Wisconsin has some of the best beer and cheese in the country. Find a local creamery near Oshkosh and a brewery or two.

I took a day off of the show and rode my bike around downtown Milwaukee. Hit a bunch of breweries and had more cheese curds than I should’ve.

Damn good time up there

Get the stuffed chicken wings from Mai’s Deli, chicken wings stuffed like an egg roll. Pretty good Mai’s deli

They usually have a couple of accidents every year, That’s about all I remember about Osh Kosh. Wisconsin in the summer is a nice place to visit. If you stay in Appleton you can get up to Lambeau for a tour.

Thanks for the insight. We plan to spend a few days in Milwaukee

Will look at attending the airshow later in the week based on your feedback.

Yes, amazing experience. If you consider yourself an AvGeek or enthusiast, you must put it on your bucket list.

Adding to bucket list now. What do we think about bringing children?

Multiple times. Best way to do Oshkosh is to fly in and sleep under your own wing.

Landing is a bitch because it is the busiest airport in the world at that time. There are multiple aircraft all heading for the same runway and you have to hit your color to land.

I was part of a demo team that jumped into that show twice over the course of two consecutive years in the 90s after I got back from Honduras.

Met a lifelong friend there ... just talked with his Son yesterday. We were talking about the show. His Dad was a good guy. Wrestling Coach. I miss him.

I'm pretty sure we're living in a simulation given that Doug and I spoke yesterday ... and here is this random thread on a forum I frequent today.

Attend the show ... it's a great show, great people, awesome experience. One of the two Golden Knight teams will jump in .... we've been doing it for decades.

Some smoke show worthy beautiful young women are always there ... Knight Groupies. This show brings out what little Wisconsin talent there is ... but there definitely are some, trust me. Natural blondes abound and they're bored during summers up there so they show up for this show.

Honestly, for some reason, Wisconsin has their fair share of tall, lithe, blonde haired blue eyed women. They just don't stay there when they don't have to.

Oh, and eat the cheese curds. Actually, they have some great food up there.

Appleton has better everything over Green Bay and Oshkosh. Will agree with everyone here about the cheese curds, Wisconsin cheese is hands down the best in the world which makes their local tavern pizzas S-Tier.

I went decades ago, like 1990. It was GREAT. We stayed in a university dorm, with no AC. The first night or two were warm, muggy and miserable, then as advertised, the weather changed to ice cold overnight and we were comfy for the remaining nights. Lots of folks camp out, but you MUST be prepared for a drastic weather change.

Every so often EAA coincides with Pulaski Polka Days. It’s sort of like the Glastonbury Festival for Polka music and it’s a good time. Some bars will have live non polka music and the food ranges from fun to interesting to fun and interesting. A decade or so ago I struck out in hilarious fashion trying to pick up Mollie Busta. I had no idea who she was at the time.

If beer isn’t your thing but wine is don’t sleep on the number and quality of wineries Wisconsin has. If beer is your thing, Spotted Cow is overrated. It’s an ok beer but New Glarus makes better stuff than Spotted Cow.

You’re going to encounter a bunch of GA boomers asserting their right to camping spaces. The airshow is top notch.
