I really liked it. Wanted to read it before I watched the series. Any other similar books you would recommend? I guess old fashioned detective type books?

It's a great book. I would continue with Frederick Forsyth books: The Odessa File (also a good movie) and The Fourth Protocol (also a great movie starring Pierce Brosnan). The Eye of the Needle by Ken Follet and maybe something by Ludlum (on my list for next book).

Check out the spy thread for similar recommendations.

Jack Higgins (Eagle has landed among others) and Robert Ludlum (Bourne trilogy among others) are great for old school guys. Alastair MacLean (Where Eagles Dare, Navarone books among others) as also very good.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this first. I’d never really heard of the guy now I see he’s been writing forever. I just started Dogs of War.

The original movie was also very good. Remake not so much.

Second "Dogs of War" book.

The hunt for Red October was an awesome book. One of the few books where the movie was very good as well.

Is the movie The Jackal with Bruce Willis based on this book?

Loosely. The 1973 movie is great.

Just finished this. I'm an audiobook guy because I am constantly driving and also a bit stupid and lazy and I read all day. My mom always had this book in the shelves. I remember seeing it all the time growing up but I never read it. It was really enjoyable. An old-school thriller. No bullshite. I liked how Forsyth would get really descriptive. Kind of like Cormac, but with punctuation.

I have started The Odessa File now. So far, same thing. Going to try all the recs in this thread at some point.

Just finished the Matarese Circle by Ludlum and did not care for it despite the plot about multi-national corporations and failed governments being very prescient.

The 1973 movie is a classic, it is the tightest movie ever, not a wasted minute, every scene important. It's over 2 hours and it moves so fast you think it was half that long.
