Thinking 4 in Rome, 2 Venice 2 Florence 1 back to Rome for flights.

Taking my elder parents on their first Europe trip with my then 1 year old in May, not sure how we should split the dates depending on what’s more enjoyable. Also was told it’s jubilee year which means crowds on crowds.

I would set it up to fly into Marco Polo and fly out of Rome or vice versa. There's no need to do south to north and then back south.

Then you get 2 Venice, 3 Florence and the rest in Rome and eliminate an unnecessary travel day.

If it was me, no question 3-4 Florence, 2-3 Venice, 2 Rome.

But I dislike Rome with a great passion and Florence might be my favorite city on earth. I also like Venice especially at night once the tourist hordes are gone

I'd spend extra to fly into Rome and out of Venice (or vice versa), unless the amount is CRAZY

5 nights in Rome is nuts to me. I'd cut that time down to 3 tops and add extra time in Florence.

That is about right.
There is a lot more to see in Rome than in the other two.
There is probably more to see in Florence than in Venice but Venice is a great place just to hang around.

It’s too bad you don’t have a few more days because 9 days is pushing it for these three cities, especially with travel time. You could spend a week just in the Florence/Tuscany area.

We did 3 days each in 2000 on Honeymoon. Florence included day trip to Pisa that was meh.

Maybe would’ve preferred 4 Rome, 2 Florence with no Pisa, and 3 Venice. Hopefully can visit more of Italy one day.

Thanks all for feedbacks. Question: is a car a necessity or can we get by with taxi?

My parents are older can’t walk too much and I’ll have a 1 year old. Not sure on renting a small van or not

Unless you plan to leave the cities there is zero need for a car. Rome is not a city I would consider driving in, period. Obviously there's no driving in Venice and Florence is pretty compact.

They don't have Uber but there are ride apps you can use.

I'd really take a hard look at what was suggested in cities to fly into and out of. 9 days isn't much and with elderly parents it's going to feel like you're traveling constantly as it currently stands. Your parents are going to be worn out.

We haven't even addressed how the jet lag flying east is going to affect them. Add in the fact that it's Seattle to Italy and not from the east coast?

Honestly, it sounds miserable to me.

This is a fair argument and we are looking to have a day break for both. I’m also open to truncating the trip to 2 cities but my dad really wants all 3.

How are the trains going in and out of cities? It looked like a quick ride

Pretty quick. The ride back from Venice to Rome is like 4 hours though.

If you could spend less than 1000 total flying home out of Venice, I would do that.

There will be a bit more walking in Florence as there are very few cars allowed in the main tourist area, which is part of what makes it so damn nice. Florence to me is pure magic.

The train system is great and they have fast trains between the cities.

Also, how do you plan to manage luggage? You're going to want everyone to pack as compactly as possible as it sounds like you are the one lugging everything and getting luggage on and off of trains can be a PITA.

Given the circumstances I'd be looking hard at travel details to figure out how best to manage your logistics.

When do you plan to go?

The only reason you would need a car is if you wanted to explore the Tuscan countryside. Florence is walkable. So is Rome, although it is a lot bigger. So is Venice A car will do you no good in Venice unless it floats.

- 4 days Florence (including 1 allocated to a Siena day trip)
- 3 days Rome
- 1.5 days Venice

Consider the remaining half-day (at least) is eaten up by all the travel in between.

I’m gonna go ahead and jerk myself off with a “this is the way”

nbd really. It's only about 3 hours on FR or Italo. We flew out of Milan due to it being several hundred dollars cheaper- spent full day in Rome and took a 6pm train out.
