They should have stopped with the first movie, IMHO.
It was clear that the creators didn't even WANT to make the last one. The subtle and not-so-subtle jabs at the studio should have been clear.
Hell, the only thing worthwhile from the last movie is the trailer.

Will Smith was actually the first choice to play Neo, but he declined it in order to make (I shite you not) Wild Wild West. Almost certainly a Top 10 blunder of an actor of a role he didn’t take.

I saw an interview with Will where he discussed the meeting with the wachowskis. He said it was one of the worst pitches he'd ever seen. It's actually funny how he describes it, you can't blame him for turning it down. It did seem like a wild idea that had no shot of success.

I'm glad he passed on it because I don't think it would have been as good as it turned out to be with him as the lead. Keanu Reeves personality was great as Neo and perfect for that part. It's the reason why his John Wick movies did so well.

Vin Diesel was also slatted to be cast as Morpheus, but when Will passed on the opportunity and they made Neo white by casting Keanu, they decided to make Morpheus black and cast Fishburne, who I think did better than Diesel would have.
