Mc Arthur Park--how in the world did it become the hit that it was?

Watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice the other day and was mentally triggered back to 17 year old Butch with the wedding cake scene with Mc Arthur Park playing on the soundtrack.

Pulled it up on Apple music and added it to my playlist. After listening to it a couple of times, couple of thoughts came to mind:

-Richard Harris didn't have the greatest singing voice

-very complex lyrics and a melody that certainly didn't fit the late 1960's

That being said, how do you think it became as big a hit as it did?

I like the version sung by Waylon Jennings Waykin revisited

quote:

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no

What's crazy is how many covers of it there have been. Hundreds and by lots of famous singers.

Equally crazy is the best version I've ever seen was by the bass player in David Letterman's band, Will Lee.

Enjoy!

Because it was good.

His voice wasn't great but it was soulful, conveyed the emotion he wanted
