Fouche, Brooks and Ward were pretty good at safety in 2022

I don't understand the recruiting misses in the secondary. Some of, if not all these dudes were really highly ranked and for not one to work out is beyond me. I know rankings aren't everything but what are the odds everyone has been wrong on everyone for 3 years...

Gilbert was simple. He had SEC playing experience and was looking for a new home after getting passed up. We weren’t throwing money around for portal guys last year and he was an easy get.

Why bother talking about Ausberry? He’s not even on scholarship. Do you bitch about any other walk-one who are around because of who they know or are related to?

It’s pretty clear that the philosophy that brought Gilbert here has changed, so let’s just see how it plays out at Safety.

The funny thing about Gilbert is that as much as everyone bitches about him, we actually needed him.

He started 9 games this year. We tried to go to Spears for a stretch early and had to go back to Gilbert because Spears wasn’t ready.

We absolutely need to upgrade at safety, but I’ll still take Gilbert’s contribution over guys like Harris and Chestnut who never see the field for whatever reason.

I didn’t know Ausberry wasn’t on scholarship so appreciate the info. I guess I just don’t know why we didn’t know to hit the portal last winter hard like we are now but glad we learned the lesson

The 23 portal class had some real issues after 22 was pretty much hits across the board. Harris and Chestnut quit. Swinson was never used to his fullest potential. A few others on defense flopped, but some of that may have been House. Then you had Anderson who wasn’t over his injury. I can understand why the staff had a reaction to this, but they swung too hard toward depending on recruiting. That takes time and the transition- this year- can be difficult while you wait for these young players to mature.

Agree 100%. We’ve recruited highly to decent rated DBs for 3 years now with essentially nothing to show for it. I can’t understand how that happened.

All of them would look a whole lot better if the front 7 performed to standard.

Fouche and Brooks were pretty good. What safeties are being asked to do now as far as run support and pass defense is different than it’s been in years past.

First, there are more of them on the field at any given time in today’s 4/2/5 or 3/3/5 formations.

Second, because so many offensive schemes involve running QBs, the decision of whether it’s run or pass has to come quicker and reaction time if the play gets extended is less.

It’s a harder position to teach and play than even a few years ago. And like it or not, Jayden Daniels, and others, had a lot to do with the change.

all of them would have performed better if they didn't start every play at cb 6-8 yds off the los and the safeties 15 yds off the los.
Sure they might get beat on occasion...but they do that anyway, and maybe they might stop short passes in front of them, miss tackles, and wr is running free. We need a different, more aggessive approach to defense as a whole...something that Baker promised pre season. We were anything but.

At some point don't we just look at the lowest common denominator? The DB coach?

I’m not sure how much more aggression you expect, short of going cover zero every possession.

We all do. We've watch good safeties come through LSU for years. So I'll ask you what happened in 2023 & 2024?

Yes and no. Both Raymond and Olsen have been here only one year now. The coaches that did not evaluate or coach those dbs properly are now gone so it's hard to put the blame on Raymond and Olsen if you're talking about DBs we missed on over the past 3 years.

Would’ve been nice to get the Ausberry brother who’s actually a quality player at this level.
