If heaven forbid Nuss goes down next year

I feel pretty good with Van Buren coming in, especially with all these weapons.

Are we sure he's even the number two? I would expect Colin Hurley to have something to say about that, especially since he's been in the program for a while now.

If Nuss goes down we’re cooked for anything meaningful

There is absolutely zero reason to believe Hurley is ahead of Van Buren. Van Buren performed admirably for an overmatched SEC team, we have no idea if Hurley can even play at this level. Maybe he can but there’s no evidence of it.

Hurley just hit 1 year here, so thats not exactly long. He is turning 18 in the spring. So he's pretty young still.
van buren has the experience edge on him (even if it was at another school) and is probably slightly more mature just from an age standpoint.
Not saying Hurley has no chance here but there's good reason the coaches went out and got someone with good experience under their belt already.

A guy that started 7 SEC games vs. a 17 year old (to be ) RS Fr who has never taken a meaningful college snap? Yeah, I'd say Van Buren is the #2

Define feel good. Do I think he would be a complete disaster? No. Do I think we would be a playoff team? Also no.

I feel more comfortable next season over this past season

We missed out on Underwood and Collins/Swann are transferring out. We need bodies.
Also, 1 year in a system is better than zero. I fully expect him to compete for the backup role

Van Buren played well considering how had MSU was. He also gives fans what they want as a mobil QB that can make plays with his feet. His stats running aren't good, but he was running for his life at State. Hurley is more of a pocket passer and has no game experience. Maybe Hurley shows out in the spring, but I bet BK goes with the guy that has proven SEC experience.

And instead of just getting said any body they got a guy who started 8 games this season (7 against SEC schools). That helps give you a big leg up.

For chemistry with the players, sure, but I'd argue real SEC game experience also trumps that. They will obviously be competing with each other in the spring, I would just feel like van buren has most of the leg up in that race entering it with his experience and being MUCH older than Hurley. Remember Hurley isnt even 18 yet. Kid is REALLY young for college. Van buren is actually turning 21 in July, which Hurley will be 18 just before that. The differences between most 21 and 18 year olds in college is notable.

We aren’t paying him 400k to be the third string QB.

My question is Van Buren the long term answer at QB or is he just an insurance policy for nuss next year. I think he's a great option if nuss goes down but Is he the next elite QB at LSU 2 years from now?

If they were confident Hurley could start next year if Nuss went down, they would not have gone to get an SEC starting QB to ride the pine behind Nuss. I'm not even sure how they convinced him to come considering he wasn't exactly a bad QB.

The coaches will know a lot more once he gets on campus and starts competing, he showed some promise this year but it doesnt mean 1 thing or another in terms of can be a starting QB in the SEC successfully in the future. The good news is Hurley or Van buren hopefully dont have to start any games for us next season and they can compete with probably another portal QB we bring in for 2026 and all 3 of those guys wont be "young" any more at that point. I would assume if they feel like van buren aint it and Hurley doesnt progress enough they go very aggressive in the portal for a proven QB for 2026. IF they feel like Hurley or van buren look promising this year they might back off a big and just get another decent portal QB to compete with them potentially but also be a viable backup for 2026.
At that point it's about bridging things to the 2027 loaded QB class, but we cant expect those guys to necessarily start as freshmen either. It also wouldnt surprise me if between now and then we target a 2027 QB we want to reclassify to 2026 so we can take 1 of them in the 2026 class and the other in the 2027 class. Maybe someone like Nuss' brother could reclassify. Take him in 2026 and then shoot for Haven in 2027.

For like insurance maybe. Not the fact that Hurley is not good enough.

I'm sure the 49ers didn't expect to draft Trey Lance 3rd overall to have the last pick take his job.
I'm not saying it's Hurley's job to lose, only that the kid came out of high school early and you don't do that if you're not ready to play soon.

We won’t be dynamic enough on offense without Nuss to beat multiple elite teams. Is this that radical of a statement?
