Could Caleb Williams be the next Sam Darnold?

I don’t think he has the leadership qualities or ability to be a leader of a team. Nor the mental strength to do it. Don’t think he has the mental ability either to be able to execute at the line or read defenses/change plays, etc.

BUT, could he be the next Sam Darnold in ~5 years that sees much better success personally and team-wise with a new team around him and a great marriage between himself and the playcaller/coach?

What do you think?

Just like Darnold, it'll require him going to another team that is stable with good coaching b/c both him and Williams were/are on teams that absolutely failed or is failing them. You can't win in either Chicago or NY.

A lot of times when a QB busts, it's b/c of the situation surrounding them.

The Bears had 1st and 10 on the 40 with two timeouts last night. Their kicker’s range is about the 37 and in. What would any decent QB do in that situation? They’d take the underneath and get their team a shot at the FG.

Williams proceeded to throw 4 YOLO balls trying to be the hero. He’s more Jameis than Burrow, and that likely isn’t going to change.

Santos is 7 of 8 from 50+ this year. Take the 5-6 yards and give him a shot.

Who was the last QB to be successful with either the Bears or Jets?

I'll hang up and listen....

I'm just winging it here, let's say Jay Cutler and Chad Pennington.

Like Darnold he can make amazing throws at times but it way too inconsistent. The touchdown pass across his body that got called back last night was a throw very few QBs can make but other than that he was really sloppy.

It’s too early to say Caleb Williams is a bust. People did the same thing after Lamar Jackson’s first year when he looked really bad when he came in for Flacco. Now he is a 2x MVP and one of the best QBs in the NFL.

Too early or late to say what he will be. He could be the next Lamar Jackson. He could be the next Justin Fields. He could be the next Jamarcus Russell. Nobody can say yet.

Trubisky took them to the playoffs, and was a double doink FG away from winning one. That's about as close as they got to "successful" I think.

His style of play is not like Fields or Jackson at all.

Bears fans like Caleb Williams. Saw more Caleb Williams jerseys in the stands during yesterday's game than any other player.

Touche, but my point still stands.

It is not an organization conducive to QB development.

That will be short lived if he plays like last night many more games.

You can tell his WRs have lost faith in him with the body language they had after his shot throws.

No it doesn’t lol

This excuse that somehow organizations that have been around for a 100 years “just can’t develop a good qb” is absolutely idiotic

Just since 2017, the Bears have drafted 3 QBs high in the first round. Mitch Trubusky (#2 overall 2017), Justin Fields (#11 overall 2021) & now Caleb Williams (#1 overall 2024)
