I'm relatively new to golfing, got into it in 2020 with covid. Right now I shoot low to mid 90s most of the time. My bag is currently D, 3w, 3h, 3i-9i, A, P 58degree, putter. I've been finding my typical ball flight on the longer clubs to be line driveish and I've noticed lately I tend to land on the green but roll off the back a lot. Most my GIR misses are long because I have trouble sticking it. Ive been pondering a 7w. Heard they're pretty easy to hit compared to 3w and tend to go semi far and won't roll out as much. Anyone rocking on and any advice on which club to get? I currently have Callaway apex and mavrik clubs. If I got a 7w what is most likely the club it would replace? Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

I guess it depends on how far you hit your clubs. IMHO, looks like you have waaaay too big of a gap between your PW, & 58° wedge…

7w is usually a 3 or 4 iron replacement. However, if you find yourself hitting a lot of 7 woods you're likely teeing off too far back.

He listed that he has an A wedge, so he might be fine there if his setup is something like 46 P, 52 A and 58 Lob

IMO,

Add the 7 wood, drop the 3H, 4 & 5 irons and add a 22 & 25 degree hybrids. Would help your scoring a lot.

Add a 54 degree wedge at least.

And you would be better off dropping the 3 wood and adding a 4 wood or strong 5 wood.

A surprisingly overlooked aspect of the game is your grips.

If you’re a ML or larger glove, you may be needing to use midsize or bigger grips.

I second this, get a 5 wood that you can adjust the loft and set it to the strongest setting, that will be about a 4 wood. The shaft is a little shorter so it will be easier to control. I would drop the 3h 3 and 4 iron. The 7wood is an awesome choice, I don't have enough club head speed to launch the ball high enough to hold the greens with a 3 or 4 iron. I use a 7 wood and can launch the ball so much higher, and it holds the green well, I also replaced my 4 iron with a 9 wood. Hybrids will work but I don't particularly like the look of them behind the ball, but you might. My set up is D, 5W (with 4 wood loft), 7W, 9W, 5-9, 45, 50, 54, 58. This works well with my club gaping, you would have to try and see what works with yours, but I would definitely look into different fairway woods or hybrids instead of the long irons especially if you're having trouble with launch angle.

Not sure why I got downvoted.

He’s playing game improvement irons and probably shafts that aren’t fit for him.

There’s a reason the ball doesn’t stick and it’s not going to be solved with a 7w.

What golf ball are you playing? A pinnacle or dirty ball you found out the woods isn't going to help you stop it.

I agree with this. Getting fit is pretty huge. Game improvement irons are made for low spin high launch and long distance. Good luck holding a green with a 4 iron that spins at 2000 rpm. You won’t do it, unless you’re dropping it at an absurd descent angle.
Don’t go spend a fortune on new clubs, but you should definitely go check out the PXG rep in our area. Casey Simoneaux, dude knows how to fit and knows what the ball needs to be doing. Won’t be too pricey either. Can’t hurt to go check it out, see the difference between your clubs and clubs fitted to you

It is. I went and got fitted after I got a warranty replacement for a damaged driver I had difficulty hitting.

That driver is the best club in my bag now. I found I was using the wrong sized grips for 50 years. I used standard because that’s what was sold. Because my Driver now has a non standard grip, all my irons now do as well after I regripped them. I wish I’d known that when I was younger and in my tournament days.

Get fitted, your shafts are probably wrong. Remember this, the shaft is the engine of the golf club.

I was in the same boat a few years ago, and shooting in the mid 90's as well. I ended up taking a few lessons instead. 4 and 5 irons are probably my favorite clubs to hit now. I had never broke 90 before lessons. I’ve broke 80 a couple times now. obviously, i'd recommend going to a pro a getting a lesson or two before any big purchases. I surprised myself how much effort i was putting into playing bad golf. and i agree you might need another wedge in there. Good luck man

André @ Pelican Point. James Leitz went over a few things with me during a fitting and id like to take a series of lessons with him eventually as well
