Deadline

quote:

After the Thanksgiving duel between two female-driven movies, Moana 2 and Wicked, the holdovers will give way to Christmas’ two big tentpoles: Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney’s prequel Mufasa: The Lion King.

Given the teenage boy and gameboy rage, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will upset Mufasa in its domestic opening with high $50Ms to $60M. Some rivals even believe there’s a greater gap between the two well north of $10M. However, in its global debut, Mufasa is king at $180M. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 won’t begin its overseas rollout until Christmas Day.

I mean, it makes sense now since everyone wanted Sonic 3 and apparently they’ve knocked this one out of the park sitting at an 86% on RT and critics are favorably comparing it to Akira (which sign me up for that). But it’s still unbelievable it became a hit franchise after starting off with this:

But the Lion King Mufasa… the very concept ruins the original since apparently it’s revealed that Mufasa and Scar aren’t actually brothers and that Scar is the rightful heir to the throne, meaning that Scar actually has a point instead of being a completely evil green eyed monster. Who asked for this movie? It’s getting killed by the critics and I doubt the audience will be much nicer to it.

I hope the Lion King bombs and no one sees it, and Sonic soars since they actually listened to their audience rather than just providing us shite.

EDIT: L O fricking L. Nearly doubles Mufasa with $60 million to $35 million: Variety

Good. I hope so. I went to see the first two in theaters and will do the same this weekend. They're alot of fun.

And this is the main reason I went to see the first one in theaters. At least the people making the movie heard the complaints and did their best to fix them. That almost never happens.

One key decision by the studio saved an entire trilogy.

Casting Jim Carey? This franchise isn’t a success because Sonic “looks good”. It’s well written, cast well, and Carey is at his old over-the-top best.

They listened to the FANS.

I mean the lead couple is a DEI match, especially movie #2. That kinda goes against ur whole "go woke, go broke" shtick.

Are you doing that thing where if it did badly it would be because of that, but since it's doing well it isn't?

I agree, Carey's performance is the thing that put the first 2 movies over the top. I haven't seen 3 yet but am ready.

I liked James Marsden in westworld and I'm glad he got this role. Also good to see the people trying to bitch about him being in his 50s dating a 26 year old didn't stop people from going to see the movie. I'm honestly surprised he is that old.

Also according to Deadline,

Mufasa made $122 ww and conservative estimates still have it getting to $600 million.

Sonic 3 was on pace for over $70 million for the weekend but had larger than expected drops on Saturday and Sunday and ended up at $62 million. Sonic 2 legged out to $400 million ww after a $70+ million US opening.

Regardless of the quality of either film, Mufasa looks poised to make more, with both on track to roughly triple their production budgets.

Sonic hasn’t premiered in a lot of international markets while Mufasa has shot its load. Maybe worldwide Sonic won’t, but stateside and probably in Japan it’s looking like it. China though hasn’t heard of Sonic while it does know what the Lion King is, so that’s a bit crippling for Sonic overall.

Can u go ahead and tell us what ur line of what failure/success is? If Mufasa makes a billion dollars is it still a massive disappointment? Or u waiting to see where it ends to set your goalpost?

From Deadline again:

quote:

THURSDAY UPDATE: Mufasa may have entered this holiday season as a lamb, but he remembered who he was on Christmas Day, as Disney’s Lion King prequel rebounded at the box office with $14.7M to Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s $10.3M. But the critter wasn’t just buried by the king of the jungle, but an arthouse bloodsucking vampire in Focus Feature’s first day of Nosferatu which did $11.55M.

Thanks to fierce competition, we’re bound to see a wealthier 5-day stretch than imagined. While Disney sees Mufasa as $50M+ from Wednesday to Sunday, now some have the outlook north of $80M with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 settling at $50M+. Disney saw presales that indicated that Mufasa was bound to win Christmas Day, however, the depression which this prequel endured in its opening weekend made that hard to believe.

Mufasa won't get to a billion or anything, but it looks like it will have some sturdy legs.

Great first day for Nosferatu. It would be nice for an Eggers film to actually make some cash in theaters.

But SCar *did* have a point in the original. He just failed, miserably, in his execution, and he picked awful allies.

I mean they’re fun films to relive nostalgia and just have a good time at the theaters. Not everything needs to be the Godfather or Lawrence of Arabia.
