Does all the time coaches spend recruiting the portal impact bowl (and possibly playoff) preparation? Anybody with insight on how this works?

Support staff. And most times, there's been tampering/illegal comms done already.

Of course. Every minute spent on the portal is less they spend game planning. So on that level yes. But in terms of development and practice, the players are limited in the hours they have to be there so it’s not like they would have practiced longer but for the portal.

I’d imagine it’s very difficult for coaches during portal/bowl season. At least our game doesn’t really “matter”.

Probably much more stressful to manage for teams that are in the CFP, first round bye definitely helps.

Back in the 90’s we were hoping for six wins to get us a bowl game. The importance was the 3 extra weeks of practice and developing the younger talent. Extra practices and developing your talent matters less as portions of the team end up in the portal.

Not really.

The support staff/analyst have likely been scouting Baylor and putting together a game plan. The assistants are doing some of that too, but also devoting time to transfer recruiting. LSU probably will start prepping (in practice) for Baylor later this week (maybe Thursday or Friday). They will continue that after the Christmas break. Last week and right now the practice is really just focused on LSU...not specific to an opponent. Like a spring practice.

LSU's not going to try to lose the bowl game. But the prep is every bit as much with an eye towards 2025 than it is beating Baylor.

Think of all the time and resources spent recruiting Underwood. That time by Sloan was spent when he clearly needs the time to work on game planning and play calling.
