Small Engine Repair - Mufflers

Ive got a 9 hp Briggs&stratton that needs a new muffler. Engines been discontinued so the only OEM muffler i can find is expensive.
Will pretty much any B&S (or aftermarket for that matter) work, so long as it mounts correctly on the exhaust port?
or is trying to put a muffler designed for a 5 hp onto a 9 hp not going to work well?

Have you removed the old muffler to see how it connects to the exhaust side of the engine?
That is the first thing to do and then take it to a mower shop or small engine repair place to try to match one up to it.

yea, looks like a pretty standard mount to me.

As long as it all lines up properly (and it fits), go for it.
I've modified small engine mufflers before, even small welding jobs to make them work with no issues.

Yep. You may have to rig up a support for it, but for something like that anything that fits will work.

If it fits up right it should work. I modified an old dirt bike muffler onto a push mower I'd snagged from the curb. Worked fine for a few years until rust on the deck made me scrap it.

You should be able to find a lot of mufflers that have that connection and gasket. What you have to search for is something that points the muffler in the right direction that you want to blow the exhaust.

how does a muffler go bad? lol i guess rotted out.
that's an extremely common flange there. any chinese part on amazon should work. just try to locate the part number.
