Listening to Bill Simmons who's having a great convo about how legitimately great Sam Darnold looks. And on top of that, he's only 27, seems like the entire team loves him, etc.

You can't really let him go for nothing as a FA, and youd probably lose value trading McCarthy.

Will be interesting to see it play out. Have to see how the season ends, but I'd offer him a top 10 QB contract and keep McCarthy 1 more year then trade him. By year 2 or 3 it would be a top 20 QB contract in price and you'd be getting a good deal.

What a great story. Glad he rebuilt himself and ignited his career. I hope they stick with him.

Shefty said they haven't had any talks.
If he's going to command that kind of contract, they should stick with Mccarthy if they feel good about his recovery

He'll be a free agent and sign elsewhere

What would be interesting is if SF trades Purdy and signs Darnold.

Depending on where they end up for the top draft pick, I can see the Raiders getting involved.

Yea you have to trust the proven commodity and darn old has more than proven himself so far this year. Sucks for McCarthy but that’s life.

They could probably fit him under their cap with the franchise or transition tag, but that’s a high price to pay when you have a rookie that ideally would play over him.

Could try to swing a Cassell type tag and trade, otherwise just take your 2026 commentary 3rd rounder and call it a day

It’s going to be interesting. I would imagine LV and NYG will both be potential suitors, maybe CLE if they can somehow get out from under Watson. There will be enough competition that he’ll get a top 10 deal, in the $40-50M range

No way Darnold would put himself in that situation in Cleveland, that Organization sucks.

They’d have around $170M in dead cap over the next 3 seasons. Cleveland is stuck with him for the next 2 years

Yep. I think a QB desperate team like the Giants, Raiders or Titans gives him a big contract.

Darnold always had the goods. The problem was that he went to crap situations where he had no weapons he could use. In Minnesota he has weapons and a very good defense as well.

Also stories of his teammates pulling him out of the club mornings of games.

So some growing up as well

Keep the proven asset and trade the potential asset.

You can still get a first or a second round pick from McCarthy considering how much control you still have over his contract.

McCarthy sucks though. Weren’t their reports that he looked bad in camp?

The question with Darnold is does he take the big money and go to a QB-desperate team that sucks?

He's been in that scenario before and it nearly ruined his career. Would he rather potentially try and stay with the team that saved him? Or take the payday and go suck again?

I for one don’t want to see another Case Keenum to Kirk cousins situation. Keenum was making little money and took us to the NFC title game and then we dumped him for Cousins who demanded a fortune and ended up sucking

I dunno that Darnold should look the gift horse in the mouth. Vikings have clearly figured something out with him. He has two stud pass catchers one of which is the best WR in the league arguably. He shouldn’t play for a discount but he shouldn’t turn his nose up at an appropriate offer.
