Paging Dr. Acula: A much-discussed Scrubs reboot is officially in development.

ABC is in the early stages of developing the project from 20th Television (whose predecessors Touchstone TV and ABC Studios produced the original series) and series creator Bill Lawrence. A reboot or revival of Scrubs has been a frequent topic of discussion among Lawrence and the show’s cast: At a 2022 ATX Festival panel, Lawrence said, “We’re gonna do it, you guys know. If you ever have an excuse to work with people you want to spend time with anyway, run to it.”

quote:

Lawrence has tossed around several ideas for an update of Scrubs, including one that would feature members of the original cast along with a new crop of interns finding their way (the final season of the original run, subtitled Med School, attempted something like that, with Faison’s Chris Turk and McGinley’s Perry Cox teaching at a medical school).

Does Bill Lawrence have extra hours in his day?

Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey were back to back or in simultaneous production.

Didn't Lawrence leave Lasso and that's why the change from the seasons was so pronounced? If he's involved again, I hope it'll be good - but I don't know. Scrubs is one of my favorite shows ever and Dr. Cox might be my favorite character ever and these types of reboots rarely hit the mark. Half the jokes from the original run would probably be deemed "problematic" these days.

It has to have the big four in it,(Cox, JD, Turk, And Elliot) or it’s gonna bomb spectacularly.

Scrubs is in my top 5 comedies of all time. Dr. Cox is great, but Janitor gets me every time.

Not sure about Lawrence leaving Lasso, I’ll look it up later unless someone knows. Lawrence has had tons of success and his shows are generally very good. Interesting and funny guy too when doing panels, etc.

Yeah, those 4 at a minimum - especially since some of the other main supporting cast won't be a part of it.

Ted passed away, Dr. Kelso is 84 so I can't imagine him doing more than a cameo, I'm not sure Todd is acting anymore, etc.

The showrunner removed his own episodes from streaming because of the above. Do we really think he's capable of putting together a comedy today?

And Jordan is married to Bill Lawrence so i assume she would be back.

Dude has one of the best ones running on TV right now in Shrinking.

Btw, Tina Fey unfortunately did the same with the Jon Hamm blackface episodes of 30 Rock that were explicitly making fun of racists.

Is Shrinking really a comedy in the style of Scrubs though? It's at best, a dramedy, no?

Scrubs was a comedy with very dramatic and serious moments. I would say Shrinking is very much like that.

I just finished my rewatch today. Bob Kelso is underrated. That dude made me laugh my arse off, especially retired Kelso.

Watched the first episode. It was depressing as frick. That's the problem these days. So many of these "comedy" writers are cranking out transcripts of their therapy sessions and packaging them as "comedy".

The same dude that created Ted Lasso, a show everyone initially lauded as uplifting AF, just wants to depress people.

I will admit neither Lasso nor Shrinking are traditional sitcom comedies, but neither was Scrubs.

And btw, Shrinking is terrific and if you don’t want to take my opinion on it, just look at the other posters that love the show.

Kelso should be in the new happy gilmore for the celebrity tour and use the " ya jackass" line.

I love Scrubs, have all of the seasons on dvd but the last, and I don't want a reboot. Matter of fact, those shitty commercials have made me tired of Turk and J.D.
