Some recent OSU 3-stars or worse:

AJ Hawk
Malcolm Jenkins
James Laurinatis
Nick Mangold
Vernon Gholston
Antonio Pittman
Ashton Youbody
Brian Robiskie

We've had a bunch of others that have contributed, as well. These are just some more well-known names.

wow, those are some very impressive names. That list alone goes to show that a players *# doesnt always matter

Troy Smith was our last scholarship offer in 02, as well. He was a 4-star, but I think a "low" 4-star (i.e. just barely above a 3-star).

No, they don't always matter, but overall they do if you want to be successful.

What about Carlos Dunlap absolutely owning everyone in the National Championship. He was a 5 star. Janoris Jenkins for UF was a 6.0 4 star (highest 4 star) and started as a true freshman at CB. The list continues with 4 and 5 stars that are big timers as well.

In the past 3 National Champions: Top 3 recruiting class = National Champion/Contender.

Yes. Obviously, they do matter. The programs with the most 4 and 5 stars are the best. You have to be able to find some diamonds in the rough, though.

You don't HAVE to find diamonds in the rough in 2 and 3 stars. I'd take a class of only 4 and 5 stars if available. Statistically, those guys will pan out more often than the lower ranked guys.

Realistically, the 2-3 star guys are where good coaches can find the best around. Thats the difference between some of the best of the coaches in the country.

That's not realistic, though. You'll usually have at most 15 4 and 5 stars in a class, and there's a good chance (my guess) approx 33% will be busts (i.e. get kicked off the teams, backup, or special teams only) , 33% won't live up to full expectations, but will contribute (start a year or two, be solid, not great players), and 33% will be elite players (2-3 year starters, all conference or all American). So it's important, IMO, that the coaches can find at least a few guys that can be good players that are unheralded.

Yeah. But that's what I mean, you HAVE to find at least a few really good 2 and 3 stars if you want to win the NC or contend for it.
