The real problem is that baseball is now seen as a suburban sport for white kids in the US. It is no longer seen as a "way out." This type of attitude is to get kids to receive college scholarships, not a professional career. This is why the US is way behind in the fundemental developement of basketball and soccer versus the rest of the world. Kids in Europe are pros at age 14-16 in both sports and have unlimited practice time and world class coaching. The college system only developes football players worthy, on a fundamental basis, of being pros. The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and even some of the Asian countries do a MUCH BETTER job of professional preparedness than does college in any sport other than football. That is only because we are the only country where an individual can make a living playing American Football.

Youth baseball. I opened a 30,000 sq ft indoor baseball training facility in 99 and its still in business. We have literally trained over 10,000 kids. By no means would I say I have anywhere near the baseball experience that 3520 has but with kids im sure I have much more.

this thread cracks me up .. a bunch of parents living out their athletic failures and trying to atone for them through their kids while at the same time trying to justify maxing out three credit cards to put their 9 year old on a traveling baseball team ..

If you can tell me Dominican kids right now, who are playing with milk cartons for gloves and rolled up yarn for balls, are paying 2g to play on "traveling" teams then I'll say there's something to it.

This is pure greatness. Well said 3520.

Spoken like a man without kids. It's sad but today it's almost not optional if little Johnny wants to even have a chance to play baseball, soccer, volleyball, golf etc in high school. Going out for the high school team without it is like going for a job without a college degree when everyone else has one. It's actually a form of extorsion.

to this I say horsehockey! You have bought the lie my friend. This bs stinks to high heaven. My wife and I have already discussed this and have reached agreement that our kids will not be playing year round or travel team in any sport before high school.

It teaches them that sports is more important than everything else in life. As for me and my house, we will not buy the lie. If they are talented enough they will still be able to play varsity in High School and get a scholarship. Tons of kids whose parents are shelling out thousands so they can be on the traveling all star teams are never going to be good enough to play college ball. The ones who do do make it, could easily get there without the year round play.

Not saying little Johnny can't play other sports because most travels teams don't require year round. In baseball it's more like March thru June. The problem you will likely encounter if you oppose paying $$$ is that Little Johnny won't be playing baseball on the same team as his so called athletic friends.

I agree. It'd be much easier and cheaper to come on a message board and talk about how your 4 year old son said "Geaux Tigers" at a playground in front of a bunch of people who could care less.

I agree that the whole flying kids in to play and the whole idea of the over the top travel teams are a bit far fetched, but a baseball team traveling to play tournaments isn't at all a bad thing.

Growing up I played with most of the same kids through middle school and although we wern't all from the same school, we were all Baton Rouge kids. My teams played league play with American Legion and then Rough Cuts. We would play some weekend tournaments in Baton Rouge, Walker, and Port Allen. At the end of every season we would play one tournament in Florida as a end of the season treat or vacation. These tournaments are some of the best memories from my childhood and I guarantee my teammates feel the same way. The kids from my middle school teams are still some of my best friends in college right now and we loved playing together.

Easy to say, but in reality those kids who do play on travel teams aren't totally wasting their $$$. In most cases they do get better instruction and gain valuable game experience which gives them a competitive advantage.

No one is denying there are the exceptions, but it's hard to deny it doesn't increase their chances of success.
