Former Stanford star Andrew Luck is returning to the Cardinal to become the football program's general manager, Luck told ESPN in a phone interview.

Luck, 35, has accepted a newly created role at Stanford, which will place him above the entire program and is a distinct evolution from the traditional college general manager role. The hire could loom as a harbinger for structural changes in college football front offices across the sport.

Luck's role involves everything Stanford football touches, both football and business-wise. The football-specific duties of his role will include managing the coaching staff, player personnel staff, recruiting, roster management and student-athlete experience.

Luck's business duties will include some aspects often associated with an NFL team president role -- fundraising, sponsorships, attendance, sales, in-stadium experience and alumni relations.

"I'm excited," Luck told ESPN. "I think Stanford is taking an assertive and innovative step. We're undoubtedly the best athletic department in college sports. We have to re-prove it in football, and we're excited to be part of that challenge."

If Stanford and Cal get serious about football they can be powers. Luck seems like a good choice for this new concept.

Perfect hire.

Can’t wait to see how many terrible GMs these other “universities” bring in soon to copy.

Luck seems a bit "different" to me. wasn't he the guy who allegedly wanted to talk to his first date about the history of cement?

either way, i don't know him too well, but good LUCK to him

I'm sooooo funny.....

If this means an end to 10-year, stupid money contracts for head football coaches, bring on the managers.

Wasn't he also using a flip phone and not having any social media presence.

It takes some eccentricities to walk away from millions and retire at the prime of his career

To be fair, the Colts OL was horrific if I’m not mistaken. The dude kept getting injured.

Yep, he took a beating. He comes from wealth and is very smart, it's actually not shocking at all that he walked away. I worry about Burrow and Allen ending up like Luck soon.

UC Berkeley and Stanford are nationally and internationally renowned for their strong academics. Unfortunately, young recruits today don’t care about academics when picking a college. There is life after football. I remember Lou Holtz talking about recruits turning down Notre Dame and going to football factories. Holtz described that as a 40-year mistake. Notre Dame and Stanford have a very strong alumni hiring pipeline, especially in business and finance. This applies to other sports too.

I'm pretty surprised. I thought Luck was done with football entirely and fell out of love with it. I guess this new wrinkle got him back on board. The university needed some kind of shake up. I like Troy Taylor, but he might get let go soon.

Fun futures bet: Who lasts longer, Buster Posey or Andrew Luck? I can't even guess.
