Tyrann Mathieu at a career crossroads. Any chance he joins the LSU coaching staff?

He has hinted at this in the past. With 12 years NFL experience and a member of the all decade team, it seems like he would be a boost to recruiting and mentoring.

I hope he does eventually, but I saw him say something about wanting to play 2 more years before retiring

The honey badger is a great player obviously, but what makes any of you think the guy can coach?

Guy’s got a super high football IQ and is supremely relatable. Not suggesting to hand over the reins of the program to him or anything but I think he would excel in the capacity of a position coach and recruiter with the potential for advancement up the coaching ladder if he did well

Can the guy become like Frank Wilson’s apprentice or something?

I'm not sure he can, but he definitely seems to have solid leadership characteristics, which is part of it. It would be neat to have him coaching, and especially here, but there's no telling how it would turn out

That's why I mentioned recruiting and mentoring. He would have to work his way up through coaching. But based on the things he has overcome in his life to succeed, I think he will succeed at anything he wants to do.

Yeah and Michael Jordan will make a great GM. He’s really competitive and knows the game of basketball. Someone just needs to give him a shot.

I bet Tyrann could help the NIL massively too.

Call up on NFL buddies to throw some dough

He can join the staff after Brian Kelly's tenure because I don't want him anywhere near Kelly's sinking ship.

Let the man come coach under the next coach.

It is a fair question. Just because he has been successful in football, and has turned his life around (which is awesome and much respect), doesn't mean that he would be a great coach. Maybe he would. Maybe he wouldn't. He has natural ability and instincts that can't be taught. If he is interested, I think that would be great.

I understand every great player doesnt make a good coach... but who am I to question a LSU great/ NFL All-Pro that WANTS to come back and coach at LSU. At the very least, he could help bring back the pride our DB room use to have.

...now If he retired and joined another SEC program as an analyst, you would probably be the first to call him a trader or whatever.

he needs to go somewhere and get some experience. as proven with sloan and some others, this is not a training wheels program for coaches.

I think this could be the situation - he undoubtedly had that 'instinct' that I do not see how could be "taught" - I would imagine he could not explain the 'thought process' he went thru to make an interception most of the time.

Of course he could define with great authority his process for setting up his position, and cues for the first responses but after that I suspect it is all reflex action. And I suspect he would be great at identifying that quality in other players.

Lots of practice could provide the set bed for the proper reactions - and identify those who "just don't get it."
