I’m gonna get a new rifle. Narrowed it down to these, due to my son wanting to go that direction.
But I have no experience with any prc caliber.

Looking to broaden my knowledge about these and see if I’m overlooking something.

Just a bullet chuker like the rest of them. How far do you need to shoot, how windy will it be, and how much payload do you need on target?

If the answer is deer hunting, just get the 6.5

Agree, just get the 6.5 PRC, if deer is your biggest target animal

Another vote for 6.5PRC. If you have to have bigger then get the 7mm. Using 7mm for ELR competition, but 156 grain 6.5PRC bullets are some of the best around for any caliber.

The PRCs shine with heavy for caliber bullets. With that in mind, you might not want to go with a 300, as the sweet spot might be a 200 grain bullet. The heavier the bullet, the heavier the recoil.
I may end up with a PRC eventually, but I don’t see where they provide much advantage in making me a more effective big game killer.

And it’s not too late to tell your son you’re going with the whitetail death ray.

100 grain scirocco

+2.3” at 100
-19.5” at 500

Put crosshairs on the back line at 400-500 yards and shoot. No turrets to twist.

That would be the mild for a magnum 257 WBY

Unless you’re hand loading get the one with the most readily available ammo.

Are you just planning on using it for deer hunting? Also are you planning on reloading?

The PRC are great rounds but they shine from reloading.

And if just for deer hunting, the PRC is about $20-30 more per box of ammo over the 6.5 creedmoor and around 200fps faster. The creedmoor will be infinitely easier to find ammo for as well.

I reload and can push my 6.5 cm up to around 2900 fps with 140 gr Nosler partitions.

They are generally similar in older cartridges but incorporate modern features to be able to do two things:

They are very forgiving with load selection due to the chamber geometry which makes handloading easier. A wider range of load combinations will shoot accurately and brass will last longer.

They are twisted faster to shoot heavy for caliber loads off the shelf.

If you don’t handload or plan to shoot steel at 1000+ yards, get a 300wm, 7rm, or 270 win for similar performance and greater ammo availability.

My 16 year old daughter shoots a christen arms 6.5 prc suppressed. Hornady 143 eld-x precision hunter ammo. It’s death at trigger pull.

Nilgai is probably the largest.

You should probably just get a 35 whelen then.

ETA: If you’re planning to hunt Nilgai, I don’t think there’s much of a decision to make. 300 would be the best. You could kill one with all 3, but finding it after will be the challenge.

7mm08 is a good choice. Bullets readily available, cheaper, and not a gimmick caliber. White tails, no problem. Watched a rancher friend in Wyoming kill a 250 lb Mule Deer with one. Dead right there. 308 case(also a great option) necked down to 7mm. Get the 139 grain bullets and go kill.

Out to 300-400
6.5 prc = 270 win
7mm prc = 7mm mag
300 prc (missile strike)= 300 win mag
The real gain is extreme distance with more recoil and more expensive to shoot. If I had to choose one and I hand loaded the 7mm prc would be the one. Factory ammo? 6.5 prc

Well, nilgai are supposedly pretty tough. I'm sure they'd all work fine. I'm a fan of big shite so I'd get the .300 if it was for myself. I'd have to get a good dialing scope, start reloading, find somewhere to shoot far. It'd get expensive quick.

Not knocking the 7mm-08.
I have plenty of 7mm-08 rifles.
My wife and kids shoot them as do I sometimes.
My wife is on the stand now with hers.
I just like the PRC better

Unless you get a custom 7mag with a fast twist barrel, people seem to forget the 7prc was made to sure high sectional density for caliber bullets. Balistically it can be the same or better than a 300 prc at distance, just lacks some of the energy. 7PRC with a 180 ELDM or 6.5PRC with a Berger 156 is the ticket.
