Moved into a new house and have been thinking about upgrading to a new grill as a housewarming gift to myself. Been using a Weber Spirit II propane grill that I bought new about 6 years ago. The Weber still works, but I’ve put a lot of hard miles on it.

Things I like: Heats up quick and is convenient to use with little additional work required.

Things I don’t like: Poor temperature control. Doesn’t have a smokey or charcoal grill flavor.

Based on this I’ve been thinking about getting a pellet grill, but I’ve been long skeptical of using what I previously thought amounted to a glorified oven. As much as I’d like to go with something like a green egg or similar, I just don’t know that I’d use it as much for quick meals on a weeknight.

Based on these considerations, what would you do? For the pellet grill crowd, what’s been your experience and preferred brand / model?

You'll get more smoke flavor from charcoals. You have propane, which will not make it smokey, it will just produce high heat very quickly. Pellet smokers that can produce high heat are good at temperature control, but it's not as noticeable when you're using them as a grill function. If you were to run a charcoal vs. pellet grill at the same temp, you're going to get more flavor from the charcoal every day. It's just a matter of paying attention to your temps.

I've heard plenty good about Green Egg and Traeger. Go with RecTec if you want to splurge. I will say that having used a Traeger for a smoker with a hopper that automatically loads up pellets is a very convenient function to have, especially ones with Bluetooth. There's just slightly more smoke flavor when you use actual wood vs. pellets

I get a lot more use out of my Blackstone than I do my old favorite Weber these days. If you haven't looked into one already check it out. Not looking to derail the grill thread with a griddle pitch, but I absolutely love the Blackstone.

I have.....

A pellet smoker (Z Grill)
A gas grill (Charbroiler)
Griddle (Blackstone)
Charcoal grill (Weber Kettle)

I use my pellet smoker more than any of them. I'll use the gas grill to char a steak, the Blackstone for breakfast, blackened fish and fried rice, weber when I'm feeling nostalgic. When I want a little smoke flavor I use my pellet smoker, I probably use it twice a week on average. Its so easy just to turn a dial and start cooking. Does it turn out world class smoked meats..... no. But the convenience of them can't be beat.

I actually have one of the two burner blackstones as well. Picked it up in someones front yard with a sign that read "works well, just needs to be cleaned". I haven't used it as much as I should... need to get the griddle properly seasoned becuase I feel like it is always building up rust.

As far as the pellet grills go, is there a noticable difference between a Traeger, Pit Boss, Rec Teq, etc?

Take a look at the masterbuilt gravity smokers. IMO its like a pellet smoker that uses charcoal or wood as the fuel. ONly negative si the flair up potential but its managable.

I was thinking about a pellet smoker but never cooked on one and worry about the lack of smoke flavor. I was looking at getting a vertical to try out and was looking at the Pellet Pro from smoke daddy. LINK

I would recommend a Kamado style, whether BGE. Primo or Joe. It is gonna be the most versatile option for hot and fast as well as smoking. They will last a very long time if taken care with no worry of any electric or mechanical breakdown like a pellet grill or gas grill.

I'm really waiting for Napoleon or Weber to make a combo in the Summit size with natural gas. I know I can do grill grates or whatever to create a half griddle, but it's not the same.

You can't go wrong with a Weber kettle. It really doesn't take that long to get your coals ready, especially if you're using lump charcoal. Lately though I've been using my Weber Smokey Mountain more than my kettle. If you take the water bowl out you can get some great direct heat flavor without having to worry about flare ups. This is now my go-to method for wings, leg quarters, and whole chickens. The juices dripping into the fire creates a great smokey flavor. About the only thing I use my kettle for nowadays is steaks and burgers.

I’ve had a Primo XL, Yoder pellet, Weber Performer and PK charcoal. By far the easiest and quickest is the Weber.

I've had this and pellet. The pellet is still far more convenient. You still have to light the charcoal, the hopper just acts as a chimney to light. You will have to monitor and add charcoal through longer cooks. I would go through at least one bag of 16lb charcoal to cook a brisket, probably 1.5 to 2 for the full cook. There is also no "direct" contact with the charcoal, it provides the heat and smoke into the box similar to a pellet.

I also got my master built when they first came out so compared to my pit boss the build quality was lacking.

All in all I would say it is a less efficient pellet grill with maybe one or 2 pros.

Defiantly less efficient than a pellet by a big margin, I wasn't comparing that. I can run a single split of wood surround by charcoal for the flavor that I can not run on a pellet. Not sure of the flavor difference since I dont have a pellet grill. I do have 2 Primo XLs I have not light in years because the MBGS is much easier and bigger. They will not last as long as the primos but I will get some years out of it and have.

Wasn't trying to dog the masterbuilt. I loved mine while it lasted, I've heard that they have improved some of the things that failed on mine. My baffle that distributed the heat burned/rusted out along with some other internal parts. It was going to be around 200 in parts to repair it so I tried a pellet.

It's the most convenient grill you can get and still have the charcoal flavor. I do like on my pit boss that I can open it up and cook over direct flame of the pellets for searing. With the masterbuilt you can't really do that, although it will get hot AF. Had mine over 900 several times.

I’ve got a Weber charcoal and two BGE, one large and one Xl. I use the large egg almost five times a week, easy to start and very quick to heat up.
Highly recommend!

I think it depends on how you cook most frequently. If you like zones for grilling, Weber will be better than BGE. If you do a lot of long cooks, BGE will be better. I prefer Weber for how I cook, plus the Weber ash management is unmatched

Or you can get a kettle and a wsm for less than an egg and cover everything
