Why would Woodward pay a coach this much?

This is what you pay a coach who has been with the program for five years and the program has consistently gotten better and the 5th year is a national championship. This is what we should have paid someone like Saban after he won the championship. Not BK who hasn’t proven a damn thing beating up teams outside the top 25 at ND! I’m convince will sold our souls for 2019.

Kickbacks from Fisher and Kelly?

He’s the problem. Going around the country giving his buddy retirement gigs.

Every time there is a coaching search the fans demand a “big” hire. Well, that demand well exceeds the supply of such people who fit that criteria. Saban, Dabo, Smart weren’t coming to LSU. Many didn’t want to consider Urban Meyer. They were a few of the only consistent CFP coaches in the market. The others were Riley (OU) and Kelly (ND - 2018, 2020, and 11-1 in 2021). LSU fans wouldn’t have been happy with Napier, or any other HC who did not have a playoff pedigree. They DEMANDED a big hire.
When demand is high and supply is low the supply side has ALL of the negotiating leverage. It took that massive contract to get BK away from a job where he was having success and was being paid very well. Same for Riley to USC. It’s simple economics
If you want a “big” hire be prepared to pay big money. If you aren’t prepared to pay big money then lower your expectations for the hire

Because he had to to get him. Just about ANY coach that you would have wanted would have been doing well in a good gig. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have wanted them. Hard to get guys doing well and being paid well in good gigs to uproot their families and ask their coaches to do the same and move from South Bend, Indiana (or wherever) to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
How do y’all still not comprehend this? For any coach you’d want, their current job is the default. You have to go above and beyond to get them to leave.

Nick Saban at Alabama and KS at Georgia ins the ONLY MFS that deserve such a contract.
Mind boggling how fricking stupid this was. All the fricking buyouts this school has paid and yet you still allow this type of nonsense. SW should be fired

and he did it at A&M as well....Woodward has made some great hires, but in our biggest sport in terms of support and revenue, he failed miserably here, the same as he did at A&M.

Brian Kelly wasn’t a “BIG NAME “ hire. It was a stupid one. Everybody in the fricking country knew Brian Kelly and ND was overrated forever except our retarded AD

You can say that, but the reality is that the market is what it is now and the genie ain’t going back in the bottle.

There’s plenty to criticize without having to make stuff up. A&M’s buyout with Jimbo was due to the extension Ross Bjork gave him, not Woodward.

He's signed for a 10 year contract. Seven years left. Who is going to cover the buyout. Who is going to pony up the millions for a new coach.
The reality is we're stuck like this for at least 4 more years. Woodward needs to meet with BK and the staff and ask, what can I do to help make this football team better?

I don't like the contract either, but how would you have approached the hire?
It was mentioned last night on the postgame, Sexton started these outrageous contracts 30 years ago. ADs typically get only one football hire at a school because if it doesn't work out, the baby's thrown out with the bathwater.
Had Woodward gone cheap, the entire fan base would have wanted his head.
Part of what they talked about was giving a coach more money per year, but a much shorter contract. I would be fine had they offered Kelly say 12M per year, but only a 5 year term -- but no coach will accept that anymore. They all want these 7+ year contracts.
So what do you do?

Can’t argue on that.

It is idiotic for any college to offer a sports coach more than a 5 year contract.
Kelly would have come for a 5 year contract.

Do your homework. Look at all the big hires then like Michigan State. That is what you will pay proven winners and some not so proven.
Facts are facts. Kelly is still the winningest college football coach coaching today.
This is about getting talent and that talent developing. Buying players has changed the game for all coaches and maybe that is the issue.

The Big Game Hunter's ego. Stupids never learn from catastrophic mistakes. How long did TAMU wallow around in the muck? LSU doesn't have TAMU frick you money to get out of another Woodward cluster frick.

Exactumundo. I wouldn’t have hired Brian Kelly for a 3 year contract

Woodward needs to be fired before Kelly. MR "Big Splash hire" has potentially caused two universities to have huge losses due to his stupidity. He needs to be held accountable.
