There is no incentive to win. They get paid no matter what. “Ok fire me, I’ll ride off into the sunset with my millions”. What is it a 250-500k bonus for a bowl game? Whoops do. When you have a such a huge buyout, how does this make sense?

It makes sense because they drive so much revenue. What doesn’t make sense is hiring Brian Kelly who was old and kind of a loser already.

The market drives the prices. You don’t go cheap on the head coach when your football program brings in hundreds of millions of dollars.

It’s an outdated model. Big money should be going to players.

Every major program does this now - we aren’t the exception.

been saying that for years, response on here is, “that’s the way it’s done,” or “ADs don’t even dare try to negotiate with (fill in the blank with an agent’s name “

Indiana just gave their guy an 8M a year extension before he's even beaten a ranked team

Bk is not the answer so far but in order to get coaches you have to pay what the market is at the time or you won’t get coaches to sign. Unfortunately agents and coaches have the upper hand. Woody just hired the wrong coach.

The greatest scam is giving out a big extension to help with recruiting. Like recruits are analyzing coaching contracts.

Cut the amount and length in half.

See what quality candidate that attracts.

Not in all cases does it make sense. Indiana just extended their coach in the first year of his contract.
Now, they are 10 and 0. However, their biggest win was against unranked Michigan, at home.
So why not wait till year three of his contract to extend him? They could be back to the middle of the Big 10 by then and you could extend pay him less.

Everyone overpays for coaches because they don’t want to lose theirs to someone else. So you end up with a lot of coaches getting paid a premium to lose 4-5 games a year. When the truth is tthere are a lot of small school coaches and coordinators who could coach the expense coach’s team and have the same record.

What these athletic directors do - giving big, long-term contracts and then switching coaches every 3 years is financial malpractice. Someone needs to have the courage to buck the trend.

I always hear this argument but who was coming to hire O away from us when we guaranteed him $60million? I totally understand a buyout if other teams want to lure them away. Why are we guaranteeing money to losers that no one else wants?

Outside of Kirby now a days, who is worth paying an insane salary to? Dabo who rejects the NIL life? Lane and Lanning are probably the two best coaches outside of Kirby. Franklin and Kelly are the same. Honestly I think the market resets a bit over the next few years. We can bring in an up and comer next go around without throwing the kitchen sink at them.

The feds are gonna have to get involved. Maybe ? Maybe not? Not bashing Kelly… but how does any Notre Dame coach get such a contract? They were mediocre and don’t play any tough teams. This will put us back in the convo that O screwed us. Was BK all we can get?

Id hire and young, hungry guy with a good staff. Spend the rest on players. LSU decided to overpay a coach in his 60s.
