So for 16 holes a guy in foursome was playing a yellow ball. He switched to a white ball… didn’t watch him hit.

My cart buddy and I thought his ball was mine. I smoked it.

Yes, I called the penalty on myself - - 2 strokes…. But think about it.

The other player gets to rehit from the spot he was in. I have to hit my original ball. So basically no harm no foul…. Why such a punishing penalty???

Was he penalized for violating the one ball rule?

Were y’all playing in a tournament?

If this was just a round with your friends this entire situation is stupid, just rehit your ball

He should have been penalized for switching balls as I understand it.

Are you a weekend golfer giving yourself a 2 stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball? Take the mulligan.

“Purpose: To prevent a player from using balls with different playing characteristics depending on the nature of the hole or shot to be played during a round, the Committee can choose to require that a player use only a single type of ball that is on the List of Conforming Golf Balls.

Each individual listing on the List of Conforming Golf Balls is considered a different ball. Golf balls of different colours with identical markings are considered different balls.

This Local Rule is recommended for use only in competitions limited to highly skilled players (that is, professional competitions and elite amateur competitions).“

Playing with friends on the weekend?
Elite?

I’d laugh at anyone who tried to apply this when I’m playing a $5 Nassau.

The one ball rule is a local rule that is only put in place for PGA Tour and other professional events. The USGA doesn't adopt it in any of their events, nor does the PGA Championship.

It’s in effect in all the championships, just not the qualifiers

Pretty sure all LGA tournaments have the one ball rule as well.

Yup, I was incorrect on the US Am and US Open, but not the PGA Championship. LINK

Are you playing in a tournament? Yes it’s a rule, take the penalty.

Are you playing for money? Ask your opponent what’s their preference.

Are you just out playing? Why on earth would you take a penalty on something like that.

I was playing in a very small money game as a guest at someone else’s club.

In these circumstances I would always eat the penalty unless someone specifically told me not to.

USGA and PGA of America are very different ideologies. PGA allows rangefinders in their major, usga says not to post score for amateur index if you use slope

Has to be in play. If it is not said at beginning of round.

Never offered an excuse. I ate the penalty, I just provided context on how it happened and my thought on how it is a stupid rule.

It provides no advantage to a player....everyone gets put back into the same position they were in prior to the strike...there is no intent. Many of the rule changes that have taken place have been predicated on no intent. For example, contact with ball in practice swing, double hits....all used to be penalties.

I ate it.....I just think it is a dumb rule, but most seem to disagree.

Sounds like a great sandbagging strategy. Disqualify any of your low rounds from your handicap by turning the slope on in 18 fairway

No they don’t. They say not to post the round if you used the slope feature in a round where the model local rule was in place that it’s not to be used, like a tournament round
