I call it weird.
It's almost an E7 but you are sharpening your 7.

B6/11 (if you're considering B the root). Otherwise Emaj7

Is this the secret chord Leonard Cohen was talking about?

When I play it unaccompanied it sounds like something from Under the Bridge. When I play it underneath my 9yo's keyboard part he wrote, it's the only chord that works with the weird shite he's trying to put together in his song about mosquitos chasing him and biting him.

Emaj7 (which as pointed out is this chord if the B isn't the root) i think is the final chord in each verse of Under the Bridge, try it at the 7th position (highest string to lowest):

7
9
8
9
7
x (ie don't play the low string)

Just a question, not an argument: can it be a B6/11 without an F# note?
It does have all of the notes to be an E major with added 7th#.

Yes, the fifth note is basically never necessary. It basically beefs up the the chord (and reinforces it he tonic) but doesn’t add color.

Jazz voicings very commonly leave out the fifth. That’s how they can add so many notes. Bass player would play roots and fifths though

This chord, if I am reading it correctly may be used as an alternate dominant to an A major, just like the E7

So the chord usage (and what it’s called) is a matter of context

E major seven, respell it B E G# D# or B minor add 4, but the first one makes more sense

In some sense it would depend on the function of this chord. Without context, I’d lean Emaj7/B (spelling the Ab as a G# and the Eb as a D#)

All you’ve done here is play an EMaj7 and not hit the 6th or 1st strings.

however for whatever reason he wanted

That’s assuming he understands fully what root means and not just “it’s the lowest note in the chord”.

It just helps me learn when I know enough to explain to someone else, with music or anything else. I took a big leap in my playing when I stopped avoiding music theory about 10 years ago. Past 2-3 It’s just a language, and people can be effective communicators without mastering a language, or even coming close to it.

I’ve committed to understanding the fundamentals in order to improve, so right there with you always trying to learn more. I’m quite sure you play better than me, and I’m definitely not deliberately busting out a B6add11 in a jam

Good point. The answer of what the chord is is likely C#m7(add9) or just C#m9, without the C# in the chord at all, because it’s in the keyboard. OP said it sounds like Emaj7 but sounds different with the keyboard, so it probably plays the c# note to compete the chord

And I don't play a 5 string. I can only get by with the 4 that were given to me
