Good evening everyone,
Going on my first Muley Hunt in Montana on the 17th. I'm flying with United and just looking for recommendations on flying the meat back in a cooler. I have yetis but from what I've read bc they weigh so much already I won't be able to pack out all of the meat. Has anyone flown back with their meat and if so how did you do it? Thanks in advance for any tips/tricks

Could you buy cooler, pack meat add dry ice and ship it home?

That is a option, I'm staying with family so If i get lucky and get one, we will debone, vacuum pack and freeze everything prior to flying out. I may bite the bullet and fly with my 65qt and just pay the fee if I have too.

Do you hunt back home? Muleys don’t taste that good compared to whitetails. Leave the meat with the family you’re staying with. I kill enough whitetails that I don’t worry about mule deer meat.

Magicman and I have done this from Montana. We used the 36 can soft coolers like the AO brand. Processed the meat to 50lbs including the cooler. Dry iced it the night before we got on the plane and it froze solid. Carried that shite on.
Downside is you do waste some meat. But 50lbs is a lot.
Has a local taxidermist euro mount the heads and fedex to us. Was about 125/person for that.

If you freeze it then buy a cheap cooler and check it. Yetis are too heavy and it will stay frozen for your journey home.

I do, and have put a few down already this year. I've heard both sides on the taste of the Muleys. I'm will to take it back and give it a shot at least once.

We also fedex’d a bunch of gear home and split that cost. Less to check and carry.

Debone, vac seal, freeze, and pack it into a few soft coolers

In addition to the freezing/soft cooler recs above. Southwest allows two free checked bags, I’d use them if planning to fly with meat in the future. A light cheap Walmart cooler, some duct tape, and a boneless deer would probably be no additional expense if you also carried on a soft cooler.

United authorizes 3 bags 70lbs no charge due to being military, so I don't have to worry about that part.

Man that’s awesome well there you go. I’d get some cheap coolers, stuff them full, and check them.

Fedex ship and insure it. Had a cousin do this for fish in alaska. Some thawed out and ruined. Fedex had to make it good through insurance.

I think that’s what I’m gonna do, appreciate all the advice so far. Hopefully we are successful but nevertheless we will be in the back country for 18 days.

You gotta try to not kill a mule deer in Montana.

Muley meat isn't worth the cost of shipping home.
I agree with the poster who said to give to your family.
I hunt muleys and only make chili with the meat.
Whitetail is 5 times better.
However......muley hunting is one hell of an experience. It's worth the trip just to explore new terrain and take in different elevation.
Pack your layers brother.....

Thanks brother, got all the layers etc. I’ll give it a shot on the meat, worse that can happen is I give it out to others.

I’ve been told the same, however I’m hoping to get lucky and shoot a hammer lol

Where you flying into?
I’ll be up there the same time as you. Hoping we get a little more snow in the next week.

Flying into Missoula on the 17th. My cousin lives in Ronan, he’s been able to do a lot of scouting for us and has a plan for where we are going to go.
