So before next spring I'd like to potentially swap an old GT outboard with an outboard. The hull is a center console 18x54 and is in pretty good shape

What's an appropriate size? I was thinking maybe a 40hp.

Also, I'd rather not buy new, so where can I look for a lightly used motor. Any recommendation for someone to tackle this for me in the houma or baton rouge area? How much can I reasonably plan to budget for this swap on a center console with new controls and whatnot.

I have a 90 2 stroke yammer on my 18x54. It rolls around 40.

Weight wise a 35 GTR gator tail is on par with a 90 four stroke outboard.

I’d go with someone in the 70-90 hp range on an 18x54.

ETA: a 40 ho tiller will get you on plane but may struggle with a heavily loaded boat. It’s shite and get with a 90

I swapped my GatorTail with an outboard this past summer. My hull is a custom 18x54. I found a gently used Tohatsu 60hp tiller steer. It is sufficient for sure, but I definitely wouldn't go any less than a 60. With myself, wife, 6yr old son and a big cooler, it still gets up and goes fine...but you can tell there's a load.

This has me wondering… how does overpowering a boat affect insurance?

Any recs for locating a decent used motor in the 60-90 range? Also, how much we talking to rig something like that up with new controls to fit the center console?

I’d go with a minimum of a 70 preferably a 90, in a four stoke. Marketplace you can find some deals on those size motors. Just have to keep an eye out.

Rigging will probably be around $1,500 just guessing with cables, control box, gauges, install etc.

I swapped out my GTR for a 115 sho tiller handle a few years ago on my 18x51 hull. Couldn’t find a 90 due to covid but there was a 115 in stock so I bought it. It moves pretty good, about 50 with my current prop, but it really shines with a load. I had 2 men and 5 women, all their stuff, a couple ice chests, and an extra gas can in it and it still ran 40. I’d go with a 90 or 115 for sure.

Mine didn’t say anything. I called them to raise the agreed upon value when I did the swap, told them I put a 115 Yamaha, and that was it. No questions about it being overpowered.

Hey baw. Try FB marketplace for used engine.

Depending on the engine it depends on what controls you need. You’d have to price controls accordingly. Installation can be done by any boat shop. I’d say you’re looking at least $800 in labor.
