Why do some people stop in traffic with 2-3 car lengths between them and the car in front?

I don't understand this behavior, and what I am referring to is people that are only in the lane to go straight. I get why someone would do this in a left turn lane for example in order to trigger the green arrow as opposed to green yield.
What are these other people doing? It was so egregious the other day, I almost wanted to get out of my car at the light just to get a picture.

Watching TikTok instead of driving.

Wait, is this a thing? Please explain how this works

I mean.. they can be on TikTok and pulled up closer to the car in front of them at the red light.
My only theory is that these people want to be able to accelerate faster once the traffic starts flowing again.

Have you ever been rear ended and hit the car in front of you?

It makes it easier for me to blow smoke on everyone when the light turns green.

Yeah, so if there is a spot with a green arrow, it only triggers if there's enough traffic to warrant it. Sometimes there will be just one car there when I get there, so I stop with about 2 car lengths in front of me so I am sitting on these sensors.
If more traffic comes behind me during the red, I'll just move up so more people can get it - so it doesn't obstruct the middle lane now being backed up by people trying to get into the left turn lane.

No, but that is a fair point I did not consider.

So if there is a pileup you don't hit the car in front.

The world apologizes for defying you.’

It's been a long time since I took driver's ed but the rule used to be stop far enough behind the car in front of you to see the ground underneath their bumper. Prevents you from getting rear ended and launched into them.

I get that, but let's be honest that's more of a rarity. These are daily, city streets. What these people are really doing is just backing up the traffic at the green light behind them because they can't get through the intersection now that they are taking up more space.

I understand that. These people are stopping so far back that you could fit another 3 cars in the space.

No, but that is a fair point I did not consider.
But I was hit not too long ago and I hit the car in front of me, and she hit the car on front of her - so I leave more space now
Well, I would if I had a car

I think they're texting and aren't paying attention.

Maybe they don’t want to be rear ended by some jackass and be at fault for hitting the car in front of them?

I find this is usually the same person who waits to move on green so that you get stuck for another light cycle.

Maybe they need to have their glasses prescription checked.

Well if it's Baton Rouge, when the shooting starts you want to be able to GTFO of there real quick.
