For those who are annoyed by everyone holding up phones at shows...

I do miss the good old days when there weren't distracting phones in every hand that you have to look through.
Robert Fripp of King Crimson used to have a no camera rule, which was easier policed before the phone era. Security would literally search for cameras at the door and made folks take any cameras back to their cars. In one live recording, he literally stopped the show and wouldn't continue until that person sent his camera to the front.
Nick Cave was always one of my heroes, and it was refreshing to see this.

Found a King Krimson video of Fripp stopping the show until the bloke with the camera was ejected. He was so very serious about his rule, and most Krimson fans knew about it.

Insight from the band in a pre show announcement.

I wish more bands and artists would do this. It's a hard thing to manage, though, especially with arena shows. I went to a Joe Rogan show and he had the little bags to put your phone in. I just left mine in the car.

I was in Bozeman a few weeks ago to see Tycho. It was so nice that everyone was just into the show and vibing out on the music. Maybe one or two phones popped up to grab a quick pic or clip but that was it. I think it all depends on the artist and their fans.
Great fu*king show btw

This is THE main reason I don’t go to many shows anymore. Just watch the performance!

I like how pre, during, and post-Nick Cave speech someone was film the entirety of the show with a phone and uploaded that clip.

He had to tell that one person about four times to put it away. It’s ingrained.

I don't know. I'm torn on it. I get to see a lot of great music due to fans with phones and I've never been to a show where someone was a major distraction with one. And the few times I've filmed at a show I kept it in front of my head or neck high. Overall I see them as a plus.
I'm also of the opinion fan videos help the artists sell more tickets. It wets your appetite to see them live.

You are the 1%. Agree to vehemently disagree.

This is so weird to me, I’m not going to NOT go to something I enjoy because other people are holding up phones.
Dont get me wrong, selfish people the hold their phones up and block others views, pisses me the hell off. I got into it with some boomer lady at Vampire Weekend in Chicago because of her holding her phone up.
BUT, im not going to stay home because of some assholes.

All of this is wrong.

Floor, three-quarters of the way back. I’m 5’8”. Forest of arms fully extended with phones makes it nearly impossible to see. It’s not enjoyable at that point.

Don Henley and Dave Mason have called out audience members.

At a Gojira / Korn show tonight and Joe told the audience to “put their fricking phone away!” Made me happy!
