Several years ago I found this in the surf, I think Destin, might have been Charleston, but I think Destin.

It looks cool and I keep it on my desk.

How long does a plug have to be tossed around in the sea to grow barnacles and baby oysters?

The rings are pristine, look brand new, but hooks are gone. Very odd.

The knot is shittily tied but intact, and very light mono, I'd guess 10#, maybe 12# max. Nothing a normal person would use on a plug like this in saltwater.

What are y'all's thoughts?

Why are the hooks gone? "Rusted out" but the rings are still there, and also it takes a really really long time for a hook to "rust out". Make a glass of saltwater and put a hook in it and set it on your counter, put a lid on it so the water doesn't all evaporate, and tell me when the hook is no longer there.

Hooks can dissolve in saltwater as little as a couple of months. Up to maybe a year or 2.

You need a good bit of salt. About 2 teaspoons in 8oz of water. You will also need to have the water agitated as the water in the ocean is constantly moving which will affect it over time. Moving salt water is abrasive. Then it’s probably on the bottom. You probably have abrasive sand rubbing on it as well when it’s in the ocean.

I’d like to know how many fish struck at it during its journey at sea.

Top dog. Used to smoke the trout with those in Big Lake.

If I remember right my dad used to switch the hooks out because the ones they come with would rust really quick.

I think the eye placement rules out 51. The 51s eye placement are at the tip of the nose, the top dogs are just under the nose.

Yep eye placement underneath nose means topwater. That is the quintisential 51 and 52m color “woodpecker” though. Great hardbait color.

At what point in my post did I ask what the make/model of the lure was?

My questions were 1) how long was it in the water for barnacles and oysters to grow and 2) hooks gone but rings and other metal pieces remain in like-new condition, what's up with that?

I’ll take a stab.
Barnacles coat the entire bottom of a boat in less than a year if bottom coat paint is not applied, so one or two barnacles is not really an indication.
Oyster beds are seeded and harvested in about three years so that oyster right there is only a couple months old,
The hooks may have been swapped with some red coated hooks or non stainless at some point and that’s why they are gone a not the eye.
I think it had been in the water 3.5 years

Rings and eyes are made of stainless steel. Hooks are not so rust out quickly
