Not going for 2 was one of the best call of the night.

With the emotion of the game up to that point, I could see a lot of coaches giving in to that and going for 2 and trying to get a win.

Instead Kelly trusted his kicker to tie it up.

I think if we get 2 in that situation, Ole Miss has a greater sense of urgency and ends up getting into field goal range. After seeing how easy their kicker made the OT FG he had a boot.... by just tying it up sports psychology comes into play. Kiffin ends up being a bit more cautious just to ensure no turnovers, and plays for OT....

Kelly knew that if we made it to OT the crowd would not allow the Rebels to score a TD.

We've crapped on Kelly for a number of decisions he's made but a lesser coach would have went for the win after the 4th quarter TD.

I had PTSD from the FSU game in Nola though. I was nervous

It wasn't a call. Going for two at home was never going to happen. I would be surprised if the thought ever entered Kelly's mind.

Well yeah... no one would go offense first in OT.

It was literally a call a short 2 seasons ago..... only minor difference is that we were already in OT. 1 play to win it all.

It was the right decision for sure

I’m thankful sec called Taylor down on that drive rather then give ball back to ole miss with more time left in 4th quarter

I was begging for us not to go for 2 for this exact reason. Sports psychology is a thing, and if we had gone for 2 (and made it, prob ~50% chance), Ole Miss would've forced to have been far more aggressive in getting in position for a FG.

We probably win 30% of the time when going for the two-point conversion, compared to 60-70% in OT at home with all the momentum.

Kelley has always said it is based on his feel for the game whether to go for 2. I think he felt his defense was playing well enough to trust them to hold OM to a FG. He was correct.

Ya, Like it didn't enter his mind against Alabama at home two years ago????

Do you even watch LSU Football?

Exactly my point. With emotions running high, a coach with less experience likely rides the wave and tries to get the win right then and there.

Our fanbase would have had a bounty on Kelly’s head if he didn’t defer in OT

Another difference was Bama had the momentum and seemed to figure things out on offense late in that game. Ole Miss had stalled on offense and was without their best WR. Winning the toss to go on D first is a huge advantage, not sure how LSU wins every toss.

Thats not the point though. If you score 2 right there you cant allow anything because they have about 30 seconds left to score.... By not going for the win, it eases the tension on the Ole miss sideline a bit and has them go a bit more conservative and play for OT...

But once the FG happened, you could see it on Kiffin's face... he knew it was over before the offense even stepped on the field.

In OT its more beneficial to go for 2 if you're defense first. Its really the only play.

If you have a 2 point play you like, run it at the end of 1st OT. After that its 2 pt back and forth. Just put the game on the line with your best 2 pt option.

Ole Myth was fading and out of gas. Their D line was helpless against our passing game at that point. No way you go for two there, we had the Mo.

Deion sanders does. I guess more opportunity to pad his son’s stats that way.

That ABSOLUTELY was the difference in the two situations.

In 2022 Alabama's last three possessions in regulation were: TD, TD, FG. They then scored a TD on the first possession of OT. Kelly knew Alabama had figured out LSU's defense and the odds were better Alabama would stop LSU from scoring a TD in a second OT than LSU would stop Alabama.

On Saturday Ole Miss's second half possessions were: Punt, FG, INT, punt, FG, end of regulation (after failing to get in FG range). He trusted LSU's defense to hold OM to at least a FG

Plus, LSU hasn't been good this year in short yardage situations.
