Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed an executive order Tuesday asking the Board of Regents to make recommendations for improving freedom of expression policies on the state’s college campuses.

“Students should be able to freely engage in discussions and talk about ideas and the things that they believe in because that is how we grow,” Landry said at a news conference on LSU’s campus. “That is how we are educated, rather than indoctrinated.”

“Unfortunately, what we’ve seen in college campuses around the country is where, again, as I said, one voice seems to be quieted while another seems to yell,” Landry said.

The executive order also includes aspects of a 2018 state law that requires colleges and universities to submit annual reports to the Legislature and the governor’s office “regarding any barriers to or incidents against free expression that occurred at the institution.” It also calls on the Board of Regents to work with schools to develop free speech policies. Read the full executive order below.

quote:

Landry was asked by a reporter whether his concerns about dominating ideology on college campuses conflict with a law he championed that requires the Ten Commandments to be posted in every K-12 and college classroom.

“The Ten Commandments are the foundation under which Western civilization lies,” Landry said. “Denying that denies you the existence of the freedoms that you enjoy today.”

Many Louisiana campuses fell short in annual free speech analyses from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), an organization that monitors freedom of speech at colleges and universities. Financial supporters of FIRE include the Koch brothers and conservative foundations, although most of its donors are individuals. The group describes work is nonpartisan.

Louisiana Tech and McNeese State were the only Louisiana schools to receive a “green light” rating from FIRE, meaning they do not have any policies that seriously imperil free speech

CRT is alive and well.....and never stopped, however It should not be taught in the classroom!

CRT is a perfect topic for free speech as it is an opinion only.

Yeah, sure Jan.

One is indoctrination, only if you don't agree with it. I take it that the book bans are also protecting free speech.

Who wants to ban books? Thinking an 8 year old shouldn't have access to 50 shades of grey isn't wanting the book banned

ETA: Same way I don't want cat in the hat banned, I just don't want my kids to be forced to listen to it being read by a tranny at school

Propaganda provided in required course work is different from free speech on a campus and the consequences for a student voicing the "wrong" opinion.

Let's see, Moms for Liberty, a group which has filed bills in the Louisiana Legislature attacking the American Library Association and wanting to strip funding from local libraries and librarians that do business with the American Library Association.

Good. CRT is not only a grift to sell more textbooks it's designed to groom our kids in the wrong way.

Who gets to decide what is and what is not propaganda? The entire idea of freedom of speech is premised on the idea that people present ideas in the public square, and there is an underlying assumption that people are intelligent enough to debate those ideas.

This can't be coming from the same people pissed off at tech companies for censorship.

Why would something lie Under a foundation?

Shouldn't it be "foundation which western civilization is built upon?"

The question was, "Who wants to ban books?"

I'm not sure how you veered off of the highway, but let's try a little reading comprehension and get back on topic.

Are you equating free speech and hate speech? One is the free flow of ideas without prosecution, the other leads to 2 attacks on a former president's life

Debate CRT all you want in the public square, but not in a classroom where students are forced to listen and then regurgitate its tenets as if they are facts. The thing about free speech is that you can say what you want, but nobody is required to listen.
