It might be as simple as raising the bar and/or narrowing the posts, but the idea that a 58 yard FG is effectively a chip shot is stupid. This is a league-wide problem - the Falcons guy is not some unique talent here. It really devalues touchdowns, especially in late game situations

Koo is like 1000 for 1000 against us so he would've kicked that into a trash can to beat us.

I dont think field goals should be allowed after the 2 minute warning in the 4th.

Except when the Saints kicker makes a 58 yard game winning field goal.

Used to make 50% of FGs in 60s. Now they’re nearly automatic at a record level 93% or so. Completely different game now. They technically do need to adjust the game for the specialty of kickers now to narrow the goal posts so it’s still foot(“hand”)ball.

Kickers are too good, especially with the ball starting on the 30 yard line. Only needing 30 yards of offense for 3 points is too powerful.

The way to fix it is to actually make longer field goals worth less to prioritize moving the ball.

20 yard or less FG = 3 points
20-40 = 2 points
50+ = 1 point

This would lead to so much more strategy with teams trying to move the ball, go for it on 4th, etc.

What’s the issue?

This is the NFL, all of the kickers are good.

The NBA didn’t raise the goals cause Curry was so good at 3’s

There is no issue.

This is exactly what they want to happen. They want offense and last minute wins. The kickoff rule helps that and is a success for them.

I totally agree - raise the bar & narrow the goal posts - kickers have evolved.

Kid from a no name school easily stroked a 49 yarder outside on the road.

It’s pretty obvious something needs to give.

Can’t believe you are getting downvoted.

Ask Packer fans if kickers are automatic...

They should have a single upright that moves side to side - “moving goal post” - and you have to hit it.

The bigger issue is the spot foul on DPI. It’s ridiculous a team can gain 30 yards on a penalty.

That shitty rule is a relic of a time when passing was the secondary approach of offenses. Today is has not place. It should be a 15 yard penalty

I would still think it's anticlimactic. I'm a very casual saints follower so I'm not like worked up about this loss. I just think it's very uninteresting when teens play their 2-minute drills around getting to the 35 and then can sit confident knowing they're almost certain to make the field goal.

The NFL doesn't put a very interesting on-field product together. This is just one facet of that

Kickers have gotten damn good. I don't know if it is an issue but I think almost every saints fan thought the Falcons had this won after that penalty.

Hell, even the Falcons knew Koo was going to nail it because they only needed about 5 or 6 yards to get into comfortable Koo range but instead opted for low percentage throws deep.

XPs were moved back 15 yards and yet teams only missed 6 XPs all year last year. They are as automatic as they were from the 2 yard line.

But it is a trend. When I was young, 50 yard kicks were pretty rare. They were maybe 50/50 shots so teams played much more conservative punting from the 40. Hell, there was talk about stopping the conservative punts by increasing the points for FGs over 50 yards to 4 points. The NFL went so far as to make this the rule in NFL Europe

Then in the early 2000s, kickers improved to a point where 50+ yarders were much more routine but still not automatic but more about 65%

Now they are over 75%. You'd be a fool not to try for the points.

Could you imagine if 50+ yard kicks were 4 pointers nowadays?

I think the NFL will adjust the rules eventually. The NFL already experimented with this in a Pro Bowl a few years ago by shrinking the goal posts by 5 feet.
