That link has better reporting,

quote:

But those three SEC schools remain off-limits, Miami officials said, because of the belief that discussions about Marve transferring to one of those institutions has been going on for some time. "The University of Miami has reason to believe that the Marve family or others on behalf of the Marve family contacted those institutions during the 2008 season regarding Robert's potential transfer prior to him having been given his release by UM," the university said in a statement released late Friday night. "We are not suggesting any wrongdoing on the part of any of the universities mentioned."

Than this one Wetzel

quote:

Friday evening, after this column was originally posted, Miami softened its stance slightly and will now allow Marve to transfer on scholarship to any SEC school other than Florida, LSU and Tennessee. Miami alleges those schools were tampering with the player. The ACC and in-state ban stands though.

I expect he'll end up at Alabama. He was committed to them for awhile before switching to Miami.

And I'm betting the ban against LSU et al has more to do with head to head recruiting battles than any alleged contact with the Marve's.

Mr. Marve has pleaded w/ Randy Shannon to pull some of these restrictions because he has cancer and would like to see his boy play in the Southeast.

I'd think UTenn would be a good fit. I don't want him at LSU - I just don't see a spot for him.

Shannon needs to chill out though....recruits are watching.

I don't want and I don't think we need him but I wish some athlete would challenge that in court.

I can understand not letting him go to teams in his conference division or FSU/UF. Otherwise, let him go to Tenn, USC, etc.

Sorta makes Trent Johnson look like a prophet. By being an arse Shannon is only hurting himself. I could see blocking Florida but blocking the others is just stupid.
I dont think this kid needs to be at LSU either.

I agree 110%. it seems to that that this kind of action has communistic overtones?

I believe it is well-established now days that "no-compete" clauses in contracts cannot be enforced if it prevents someone from getting a job that fits his skills. Marve an others should argue this point in court, with the idea a scholarship is akin to a wage (universities always tout the $ value of a scholarship) and all these restrictions prevent him from taking a job of his choice. I predict in the future the restrictions like the ones imposed by Miami here will be found non-enforceable.

How about some comments from a labor lawyer?

what UM is saying is that they won't release him from scholarship if he goes to one of those 3 schools, which means he'll have to sit out 2, instead of just 1, years.

Imagine what recruits are thinking watching this whole thing unfold. This guy wants out of Miami but Shannon won't let him transfer anywhere near his father who has cancer. Then Shannon has claimed Universities tampered with him...but Miami isn't siding with him on this. Interesting

Enough with hes just a kid. I remember when I was just a kid, and I made decisions I continue to live with to this day for good or bad. "Kids" should understand when they are in position to make more dough in one year thaan we make in our lifetime (most of us), that these decisions are pretty important and MUST be approached with caution. How fortunate these "Kids are blessed with the talents to make multiple millions. They need to realize their decisions must be made with due diligence. Some of us have had similar decisions, like go to college or stay and make that "easy money" out of high school. It happens to all of us, "Kids or not Kids."
