Need to replace roof and remodel bathrooms/kitchen (35 year old house). Estimated costs are $70k

HELOC rate is 8.35 with NFCU for 20 yrs.

Have 75k in savings with 5% interest rate.

Don’t want to touch savings but also don’t want to be in debt. Any advice is appreciated.

There's no magic bullet. Personally I value being debt free over having a nicer kitchen or bathroom. The interest you've laid out says to pay for it in cash.

$70k seems like a low budget for bathrooms and kitchen. No idea what insurance coverage on the roof looks like. And no idea what you want to do in the bathrooms and kitchen so maybe it's just light remodeling. Get some quotes and find out if $70k is realistic for what you want.

Talk to your accountant. Interest on a heloc used for home repairs can be tax deductible.

Might want to check that again, it certainly dropped last week with the rate cut.

The easy answer here is just pay in cash since you have it. Your savings interest is only going to be going down from here.

Dont be saddled with higher interest HELOC debt if you dont have to.

C.) Don't do it all at once. Pay for a portion of it with cash, see if you can get a tax deduction for a loan option for a portion of it, and save for some of it that doesn't need done now and do it down the road

Debt is not bad. if your money is working for you.

Is that $75,000 your entire rainy day fund, if so it would not be wise to drain it at once.

20 years is far too long for $70,000 though, when paid off you will have spent $74,000 in interest.

It's hard to have your cake and eat it too. Replace the roof because you have to. Pay cash. You don't want debt, and you don't want to deplete your cash reserves--you will have other expenses in the near future.
How handy are you? Without knowing what you mean by a bathroom/kitchen remodel, it's hard to make suggestions. There are things you can do (use youtube as a teacher) that perhaps will move you forward at a fraction of what you'd pay a contractor.
