I have a MacBook Pro which I bought in 2020 and for the past few months the battery has been losing charge faster and faster. It will not even hold a charge for an hour now. However, when I run analytics on the battery it says that the battery condition is normal. Also the MacBook gets extremely hot like to hot to use in my lap and when I am using it. It also gets hot when it is in sleep mode. Yesterday I left it on sleep mode in my during my 45 minute ride home and it got so hot that I could not pick it up. Also the fan is constantly running when the computer is on which is probably what is draining the battery. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Sounds like your CPU is getting stuck at a high power draw and never coming back down. I don't know anything about Macs, but are there power profile settings anywhere that might have gotten stuck in some crazy high performance mode?

Other than taking it to the nearest Apple store how would I find that out. I have restarted the computer multiple times and I have reset the battery to factory settings. Anything that I can do other than take it to the Apple store or hit with a hammer?

I'll have to defer to people on here who know far more about Macs than I do. I can just diagnose the (likely) problem from a general PC building perspective. I don't know the Mac specific solutions.

ETA: Though you can see if the CPU load is the issue by (according to Google), going here:

1. Open Activity Monitor (Finder > Applications > Utilities).
2. Click the CPU tab.

Yes - Activity Monitor.

You may have a program that is loading on startup that uses a lot of CPU power.

See what your top few are and try to kill any application that you don't need.

Wait about 5 mins to see if it begins to slow the fans once the draw lessens...

Literally the same exact problem that I just recently began dealing with with my Macbook Pro (2020). Do you have automatic updates turned on? If so, go turn that off. When I opened the activity monitor, I had some weird program called "installd" or something like that taking up the majority of my CPU. I followed someone's tip online, turned off automatic updates, and it seemed to resolve the problem surprisingly.

Not sure of why heating, but I had one that the battery started failing and swelling. Almost imperceptible but the Apple Store employee caught it and replaced it.

Open a terminal

Type the word top and hit enter

Then hit “shift + p”

This will show you what processes are using the cpu. One should stand out.

Tell me what that process is.

There’s a good chance you can look at the PID for that process and just type “kill -9 PID” and replace PID with that number.

Yes
But not with a Mac.
Dell xps laptop my daughter uses to edit photos.

First thing I did was open it up and cleaned the fans.
The space that allows hot air to move out is very small.
It was totally clogged up.

I now do that every year.

Thanks but I little don’t understand anything you just typed. I am going to take it to the Apple Store tomorrow because I am technologically impaired.

Thanks. I checked the auto updates and it was trying to install a new update and failing. I deleted and redownloaded the update and installed it. That seems to have fixed the problem. It has only been 30 minutes but the battery is still on 100% and the fan has cut off.

ETA: NVM, it has gone back to losing roughly 1% charge per minute. Although the fan has stopped running constantly. Looks like I get to spend my Saturday at the Apple Store.
