Amazon mandates five days a week in office starting next year

Andy Jassy, the CEO, said in note to employees that new requirement will ‘strengthen our culture’

Amazon said on Monday it would require employees to return to the office five days a week, effective 2 January.
“We’ve decided that we’re going to return to being in the office the way we were before the onset of COVID. When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant,” Andy Jassy, the CEO, said in a note to employees.
The e-commerce giant’s previous office attendance requirement for its workers was three days a week. Amazon workers can claim “extenuating circumstances” or request exceptions from senior leadership, according to Jassy’s memo.
“If anything, the last 15 months we’ve been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits.” He cited improved collaboration and connection between teams as reasons for the new requirement as well as the ability to “strengthen our culture”.
As part of an organizational restructuring, Amazon is looking to reduce the number of managers in its organization and boost the number of individual contributors by the end of the first quarter of 2025 to reduce bureaucracy. Like other technology companies, Amazon grew rapidly at the start of the coronavirus pandemic then laid off wide swaths of its staff.
“We are also going to bring back assigned desk arrangements in locations that were previously organized that way, including the US headquarters locations (Puget Sound and Arlington),” Jassy said.

Straight WFH is not ideal for most professions, but 40+ hours in an office 5 days a week is also not particularly necessary as well.
My company does 1 day WFH. I'd prefer 2 personally, but it is what it is.

Because so many people abused the privilege.

Most useless employees are useless inside and outside the office. It's training and because these companies own/lease real estate.

Office culture is a myth. It's never what the higher ups think it is.

We have a winner.
Backs it up in the article, cutting management and boosting individual contributors. Lots of turnover for a company that big at that level, more training.
ETA: solution design and problem solving are all done easier remotely with screen sharing and all that. Sitting in an office doesn't change that, everyone sits at their desks in meetings

Exactly. Because all the higher ups started their careers in the C suite and never once sat in a cubicle.

"The company rapidly grew its headcount over the course of the pandemic before Jassy took the helm and instituted widespread cost cuts across Amazon, including the largest layoffs in its 27 years as a public company. Amazon’s headcount totaled 1.53 million employees in the second quarter, representing growth of just 5% from a year earlier. By comparison, Amazon’s workforce expanded 14% to 1.52 million employees in the second quarter of 2022."
Sounds like a backdoor way to reduce head count. They will tell the full time wfh people that they hired to get to an office or get lost. No Amazon office near you? Bye.

An easy way for Amazon to get rid of some of the workforce without layoffs. Let the ones who don't like it go elsewhere

Even if they did, things change.

Glad to know everyone will spend the first three hours drinking coffee, pooping and visiting.

Not as much as most people like to think. People are people. People act like people. You're life and career aren't any more or less many meaningless than the last guys.

Usually the same from me. If I don't have very much going on I'll work from home. I'm a lot more productive in the office. Depending on what I'm working on I'll often have two or three day periods where I'm just reading through specs and waiting on vendor responses. Perfect for at home work.

The biggest offenders of dicking off at my office are the older folks. I'm 44, so those older than me. I have the misfortune of having a cube near the coffee maker and have to experience it all.

Disagree, I enjoy going into an office and working hands on with people.

Most people arent. But take eyes off them and they'll abuse it.
The best part is when the office reopened, those losers didnt come back. Win/Win if you ask me.

I dont understand wanting to work from home except to try to do less work and get away with more.
I feel like people who fight for working at home are lazier than those that actually show up. Just my opinion.
