Not sure if it’s false humility but in the afterwards of You Like It Darker, he said that only two of his stories does he ever think he ever developed out to their true potential.

The Green Mile
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption

He said it in the midst of talking about his process and is he satisfied with his work and could better writers have done more with his concepts.

I don't have a real history with King's books, but isn't this an accepted take? Isn't he known for building great worlds and conflict/tension/scares and then having it shite all over itself by the end?

Pet Semetary wasn't on the list?

Hey, I love pet Semetary. Probably because the narrator (Michael C Hall) absolutely kills it. And king in the forward does say Pet Semetsry is the book he wrote that was most terrifying

King is notorious for allowing anyone and everyone to license his works.

And those two are high on the list but The Body (Stand By Me) tends to be up there as well.

He excels at characters and putting characters in situations and seeing how they react. He does have a reputation for bad endings. It’s almost all subjective though. I personally don’t think of either when I think of king

Well he fricked up my favorite book series of all time by adding himself as a character so he can eat a bag of dicks.

I thought we were talking about movie adaptations, not the actual books. There's still a book board, right?

Yes. Very few of his books/stories are really flawless. Salem's Lot is one of those. The Green Mile was not. Never read Shawshank.

I wasn’t being specific to books or adaptions. Posted it here because Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption are way more famous as movies than they are as short stories

Jordy Verrill is his closest adaptation to who he really is

I tried. Really wanted to do the entire Dark Tower thing.
Way too indulgent and was an absolute mess.

IT and Pet Cemetery were great in my opinion.
One that doesn’t get discussed a lot that I actually thought was pretty good was Tommyknockers. King himself absolutely hates it bc he was absolutely loaded the entire time he was writing it. I dug it though

The Shining is pretty complete in my opinion. Misery as well.

I think it's just false humility.

I really did like a lot of the stories in So you like it darker. In particular, Rattlesnakes was creepy as frick and The Answer Man

Complete with weirdness. Should have been written more like the screenplay ended up.

As movies?, I dont get the OP. King is usually unhappy with the movie versions of his books, especially if the movie is actually good.

Kubrick’s The Shining he famously hated but he loved the cheaply made Thinner or Monkey Shines.

The Dead Zone book and movie, IMO, is the best with Salem’s Lot close. Pet Sematary is great too

those are by far my two favorite adaptations of his. I think both of those are better than the books.

That said, some of the other adaptations have been pretty good but some of his better books were awful movies.

I agree but he hated the Kubrick movie. It was remade years later as an ABC 3 night miniseries that he approved of. I think to get the rights he had to agree to quit shitting on the Kubrick movie.
