Question for you Pokemon nerds, do y'all buy these card packs for $100+ and open them?

I still have a first edition foil Charizard (without the shadow on the left side) from way back in the day in one of those plastic card sleeves... I'm pretty sure I can find it, and I've been meaning to sell it on eBay.

But like you said, card nerds are card nerds, and I don't want to deal with some mouth breather trying to send it back because it's not in the exact condition my ad would describe it in.

I think I could get at least a few hundred for it.

Cracking packs are a great way to lose money.

Take the set nicknamed “Evolving Cries”: You have some dope cards such as the $500+ Moonbreon, or any number of cool looking Rayquaza or Eevee-evolutions, these can range in the hundreds each.

A single booster goes for $12, or an unsealed box of 36 for $600+.

Your odds of getting something from a pack that is worth more than the pack is around 2-3%.

There is zero guarantee from single packs, as most came from larger booster boxes. Unlike Magic, where sets get opened, rares get mapped based on the print, and then selectively opened, the print run on this set is so few that you open until you find something, then dump the rest of the packs. From 11000 packs opened from boxes, a box had at most 2 Alt-VMAXs (most of the high dollar chase cards), and 3 were found at most from a case (6 boxes). The odds are shite for this set.

If you have your eye on something, buy it straight up, do not try cracking packs.

If you have a love of opening packs (I do), and want a cool but random looking selection of cards, open a newer box from Scarlet/Violet era.

Modern collecting suck, but current standard format is awesome compared to where the format has been the past 15 years

Ripping packs is gambling and are the equivalent of scratch offs. I'm buying single cards now and mainly focusing on certain sets

Sports and TCG collecting has been ruined by pure investors. I've contributed to this obviously but it kills me when great player's card isn't worth all that much because it doesn't have an auto or isn't a qb and such

What era? 90s can be a bit rough but there are some gems. Anything older you should definitely look at. As far as Lorcana, it is worth making sure you don't have an Elsa going for $1k

You never know. You want to look for the enchanted cards I believe. A graded 10 enchanted Elsa is almost $1300
