Was Miles trying to run up the score to aid our preseason.

Ranking next year with:

With the fake punt, the 54 yard field goal, onside kick, etc in ORDER TO PRESERVE A DECENT PRE-SEASON RANKING NEXT YEAR???

As tough as it is to face the truth, the pre-season ranking matters (a lot) and with the 8-5 finish this LSU may not even start above 15 next year. A narrow win against GT may not have meant squat going into next season after the late season slide LSU had this year.

If I'm not mistaken, our pre-season ranking in 2003 was #14 or so after the 2002 8-5 finish.

And with that ranking it took a boatload of help (and luck for that matter) for LSU to move up and finally salvage that #2 BCS spot before entering the BCS National Championship against OU.

Just a thought. I applaud the coaching staff for thinking 2 steps ahead.

YES.

BUT WHO CARES. GEORGIA TECH PLAYERS AND FANS WERE COCKY LITTLE BASTARDS THAT DESERVED A THOROUGH BEATDOWN.

The onside kick was in the 1st half, so that didn't contribute to an attempt to run up the score.

This is a funny quote. And it's bullshite. We were up 35 with only six minutes left in the 4th.

If Les was trying to run up the score he did a piss poor job of it in the 2nd half.

its obvious his strategy in the 2nd half was clock killing. To do that you must control the ball. The fake punt allowed us to do that.

Was he trying to run up the score in the 1st half? Of course. Turns out if you can go into the locker room with a 32 point lead, you just have to kill clock in the 2nd half.

I seriously think that Miles could have scored 50 or more if he really wanted. He was trying to keep the ball for the most part.

Possibly, but I still think it had more to do with controlling the game and giving Jefferson as many reps as possible.

Eh, not so much, really. I mean, we lost at home by double digits to an 8-5 team, and still got in. We definitely had some margin for error (and used just about every drop of it).

That doesn't change the fact that preseason rankings do matter, though. You're right about that.

I just think he was pissed about both Paul Johnson's comment and how the season went in general.

He wanted to show that LSU wasn't slipping or going away on the national scene - hear that ESPN?

No, he clearly took the foot off the gas in the second half. Running up the score is not his style

yea we really didn't run up the score or even try to. I was hoping we would though just for the hell of it.

GT was lucky they were playing LSU instead of OKLA or Florida because they would really know what running up the score meant.

No. He didn't run up the score. He went for the TD on fourth down instead of taking a sure 3 points with a field goal. The fake punt wasn't a sure thing and was simply a way to keep the ball longer, the field goal wasn't a sure thing and was a way to let Colt shine on national TV one more time. Win/win, WITHOUT running up the score. We only scored 3 points in the second half. That's hardly running up the score.

I watched the game, and what a relief it was to see LSU's engine humming on most cylinders. The team runs differently with JJ at the helm, that was obvious, and speaking of JJ, he can do anything JL can do and so much more. Did anyone see that pitch? That's poise, that's something I don't think one can learn, not very easily anyway.

Les Miles' strategy was to win convincingly, to show the football pundits and those that have influence, directly and indirectly, on pre-season rankings, that LSU has regained its balance, and possibly, just possibly, gotten its swerve back on, too.

But, AT THE SAME TIME, he did not want to run up the score; LSU has NEVER done this, and they have had many opportunities in the past -- I can't say the same of LSU's SEC brethren.

With a top ranked recruiting class combined with a solid bowl win against a team ostensibly on the rise (GT), which also showcased a new starting QB for LSU, or one to share the duty at the very least, and given some of the other outcomes (e.g. SC loss to Iowa), LSU is, imo, probably going to be ranked somewhere between 12-17 going into next season.

actually the main reason was, in a press conference before the game, Paul Johnson said " good teams don't lose 2 in a row." And miles was pissed about it.

The fake punt was with 10+ minutes left in the game not 6.

I think that Bama this year proved that, while preseason ranking may matter, it doesn't matter as much as you are claiming.

Ha! Are you kidding? JL is far better at throwing pick 6's!
