Is it possible that they have tried to do what Perkins wants to do but he isn't capable? You can teach technique but you can't teach instincts. If I didn't watch Blake Baker turn Damone Clark into a stud I'd be much more willing to blame coaching but Baker knows how to simplify things for a LBer so they can play fast.

You don’t think Perkins or his people is demanding to play inside?! I can’t think of any other reason.

It's not that at all. Perks Freshman year everyone was saying he was the best player bla, bla, bla. Kelly had to lay down that Perk was benefiting from the d-line flushing the qb and Perk running him down. That isn't happening last year or so far this year thus perk is pedestrian, playing a different roll.

Just have him as a pass rush specialist on obvious passing downs and he'll be an all american

He is an ILB & is a freak athlete. Prob a 1st round pick after he runs a 4.4

These same fans bitched about no production from Maason Smith all last year & then he was the 48th pick in the NFL draft.

Kind of like Bama and Milroe. Maybe it’s not the staffs.

It’s clear Harold is dictating what they do with him. He wants to play MLB. They asked Kelly about it in the press conference today, and it’s clear they are exploring options of putting him in different spots but Perkins is dead set on playing MLB for some reason.

Is it possible Harold is one trick pony? See QB - GET QB!
Problem is, if that is what he is and he is only that, then offenses can scheme around it and thus he is a useless player on the field other than being someone who occupies offensive schemes. To the extent this is true, then other players have to make plays.

I don't know what the truth is but Harold just lining up on edge and having a field day like the Arkansas game 2 years ago are not likely to be recurring events simply because the film is out there and he better learn how to be effective in a team role or he will not make an NFL roster.

Here’s the thing, just because Perkins “wants” to play a certain position, the coaches aren’t obligated to play him there especially if it’s detrimental to the defense.

If Perkins demanded to play ILB but isn’t capable, let him transfer and suck at that position at another school. And it’s a bad move by BK if that’s what happened and he gave in to the player.

His best spot is probably starting in place of Burns. He would be deadly there with a designed blitz package for him.

I think that says more about Perkins and his limitations than it does our coaching staff.

Smith has prototypical size for the position. Perkins doesn't. At his size you better be able to cover and be a sideline to sideline missile, he isn't showing that.

I'm going to be honest, I don't really care where these guys are drafted if they aren't being used in the best way to help LSU succeed. Saying "hey he might not have helped us win games, but he we were able to get him drafted in the 2nd round" doesn't really do much for me.

Everything doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. Acting like he doesn’t make our defense better is ridiculous

Well they care a lot where they'll be drafted and it's why Perkins is playing ILB and is useless.

This. NFL scouts, coaches etc know talent when they see it and will play him accordingly at the next level.

BK’s job is to win games at LSU not protect a guys draft status.

Marlon Favorite and Brandon Taylor (post game) insinuated that the coaches are doing what Perkins wants to do, and it’s not working out.

I don’t understand how this staff couldn’t convince Perkins to play a hybrid Safety/Lb Isaiah Simmons type role over the course of 3 years. That role is what got Simmons drafted as a 1st rd pick based on athleticism alone. He is shorter than Simmons, but he is just as good covering in space and better at rushing the passer.

Venables would make Perkins a star.
