Did anyone see the Coraline re-release?

Apparently it’s the 15th anniversary and they decided to re-release it. I went in thinking it was going to be some dumb girl-power film, but boy it is absolutely nothing like that. I was blown away by how good this film was.
It’s a film that’s dark in tone and contains metaphors about how people like to put on a facade to hide problems going on under the surface.
I felt depressed as hell when walking out of the theater. This little stop-motion film from 2009 has more creativity and art than any of the overhyped, superficial, over-budgeted, garbage movies I saw on the movie showing list.
This film contains no woke bullshite political messages, just pure art. The production company put so much effort into crafting a unique, creative world that the main character lives in. LAIKA had a production stage that spanned almost 185,000 square feet. All of the sets you see in the film were physically crafted by stop-motion animators.
We will never get films like this again.

It's absolutely fantastic, but Laika still makes films like this. Their next one, Wildwood, should be out next year. It was announced over the summer that they are developing a stop-motion adaptation of Piranesi, though that's probably 5 years out.

Saw the ads for it. Well made but not exactly my thing. But it’s up there for sure.

Highly recommend it. It’s more along the lines of Alice in Wonderland except it has symbolism implanted in it

Yeah Laika is still making films like it, but none of them really have the charm or uniqueness that Coraline has which is why it was a huge hit when it came out.

It’s one of those movies I saw once and don’t feel the need to revisit. It is very tense

It was not a huge hit when it came out. That's one reason this current release has been so surprising. Domestically, it made back just over its budget. This year's re-release is the 4th one for Coraline. It's now the 3rd highest grossing stop-motion film ever, but they pulled the old disney reissue route to get there.
Again, I really love coraline, and I adore the origibal source material, but Paranorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings are every bit as unique, and they all offer their own version of charm. Even Missing Link is unique, though if it doesn't ultimately work as well as the others.

Yeah, Kubo is a fantastic movie, every bit as good as Coraline IMO, and I think Coraline is great.
Paranorman isn't quite on the same level, but was solid and definitely had charm.

My kid was 9 when we saw it during its original run. When we got home, I taped some buttons over my eyelids and called him into the room. He almost shite himself.

It’s one of the weirdest films I’ve ever seen. The entire time I felt like I was watching a fever dream. No film has ever made me felt like that since the era of Tim Burton films

Basing that on commentary from CDAN regarding the odd circumstances surrounding the allegations. It seems that he's going through a bit of a messy divorce from a very weird musician

I haven't seen DBD, but I hope the reason for the cancellation isn't because of the off-camera shenanigans. Netflix will cancel a show in a second, so the news that it was axed didn't surprise me.
