Does anyone use creatine that has a history of kidney stones?

I searched but couldn’t find.
In 20 years, I’ve passed about 6 stones.
I work outside so I do a decent job of water intake.
But I’m worried about the effect on kidney stone development.
Anyone have experience?

I can't take creatine because it gives me gout, which is related to kidney stones. I never had gout until I started taking creatine. Two weeks after starting taking creatine, I was bedridden with the most intense pain I have ever experienced. After talking with doctor, he said creatine is not good for people with a genetic predispositions towards uric acid issues. If your kidney stones are caused by high uric acid, tread lightly with creatine. YMMV as we're all different.

quote:

The relation between creatinine and uric acid metabolism was analysed in 77 male patients with primary gout and 62 healthy male subjects. Significant positive correlations between 24 hour urinary creatinine and uric acid excretion were shown in both groups. The mean urinary creatinine and uric acid excretions in the patients with gout were significantly increased as compared with those of normal male controls. These results suggest that there is a close correlation between creatinine and uric acid synthesis. In addition, it seems that accelerated uric acid synthesis seen in some patients with gout is due to increased creatinine synthesis.

Mine are the calcium oxilate, but that’s damn good info. Thank you

I am not saying that there isn't some relation to creatine and gout, but I wouldn't use that study to solidify that belief. It's not a robust study at all, with only 139 subjects. Also, nowhere in the actual paper did it say they administered creatine. This paper is just about the urinary excretion of creatine and it's relation to uric acid metabolism. Correlation does not mean causation. In other words according to this study you cannot imply that taking creatine will cause gout. This is just my opinion, so do with it what you want.

Not saying it doesn’t have a causation to the kidney stones but I would not give the blame to creatine.

While you drink plenty of water throughout the day, your hydration depends on more than just water intake. You sweat out other nutrients along with the water. Not saying you need a sugary electrolyte Gatorade, but you may need some electrolyte, and vitamin supplementation.

I've had at least 20 of those bastards over the years and they are nasty to deal with.

I've never used creatine, so I have no experience with it-----sorry.

What I do now is drink a good bit of water a day and since I have had so many, my Urologist prescribed Allopurinol, a pill I take once daily and that has helped a lot that is used mostly by patients suffering from gout.

I was prescribed it because analysis of stones I've passed showed they were made up or Uric Acid, the same thing that causes gout.
