Avis is screwing me over

So I got a rental car from Avis on my trip back home. They upgraded me to a Rav 4. I went to put our bags in the back and noticed it had Florida plates and noticed some sand in the back cargo. I didn’t really care as it wasn’t a ton and wanted to get along with our trip.

I drove the car around Atlanta and the north Georgia mountains and returned it a few days later just as it had been.

I just got an email saying they are charging me $450 for excessive soiling (sand).

I am livid that I even have to deal with this. I have to wait til their customer service is open tomorrow but this pisses me off.

You should’ve called and let them know about the sand (and sent pictures) but that you were still good with taking it. That way they knew it wasn’t you but you wouldn’t have to wait or pay for the cleanup.

It depends on the location you're returning it to, and how they operate. I returned a car with zero damage to ORD, they signed off, and three weeks later they tried to bill me for over $1k for some sort of bumper damage that didn't even exist. Never happened to me otherwise across hundreds of domestic rentals.

The local shop is trying to bump numbers up before Q4, but trying to claim excessive sand in ATL and North doesn't seem to be a well though out scheme. Red mud, maybe, but sand?

Had the same thing in June. Had a reservation at TUL, they gave a RAM pickup. The interior looked like it had been at a worksite previously. I had a meeting to get to and didn’t worry about, 1 month later got a $250 cleaning charge. Disputed it with my CC company

Do a walk around with your phone video before leaving the lot. Be sure to get to get the location of the car in the video. That has saved me a couple of times from incurring damage charges. Good luck.

I have a hard time believing this. A rental comes with a light cleaning including. If they are going to charge $450, it was a hell of a lot more than some sand that took them 5 minutes to vacuum.

Do you know for a fact that they are even charging you for the sand or if it was something else? Hell you can pay someone to do a full detail for $450. I find it hard to believe a rental car manager would want to piss off a customer that badly unless it was absolutely accesseive.

We would never bill out for stuff like that. Sand is an absolute pain to clean up because we only ever got plastic vacuums and few places had brushes to help agitate the fabric of the cars. Billing for full details only ever happened if a car got smoked out or had stains all over.

Sounds like either as you said: someone is lying, or a branch manager was being dumb and made a very small issue into a huge issue.

OP:

don't pay the bill and never rent from Avis ever agin.

National once sent me a bill for a $400 speeding ticket, in Miami. I rented the car in New Orleans, drove about ~150 total miles.

-Sent them the dates I had the car (not the date of the ticket)
-Sent the a map showing the distance was not possible one way much less round trip

Had to argue back and forth multiple times before getting it fixed.

Yes it is true.

Trust me I wouldn’t have come to post about it if it wasn’t so outrageous. It was not a lot of sand at all. Someone put their beach bag in the back and didn’t shake off the mat. Avis obviously didn’t think it was a big deal either since it wasn’t a problem to the person “light cleaning” from the prior persons rental return.

For $450 it better look like a crime scene.

I did call and they waived it. But lesson is learned. Don’t accept anything that isn’t spotless. I have been renting cars for work for 15 years and never had this happen.

I will say that if Avis or any other rentals pull this they better send photographic evidence of what they are charging for and send it with the email.
