Just saw this one today. Did not see a thread on this one so I figured it is going under the radar.
Probably one of, if not my favorite movie I saw this year.
I will say this is definitely targeted to the early 90's kids like myself.
I think Didi is the male version of Eighth Grade or even Lady Bird. If you liked those, you have to give this one a watch.

I really enjoyed it too, never had a movie so perfectly hit the nostalgia of my specific age
I was nearly the exact same age/grade as the main character during this time so it was a real passage of time and also made me feel ancient
The meat spin reference is not one I expected to see in a theater release
If you were in middle school / high school around 2006-2009 ish, check it out for sure

Yes! That's probably the best comparison, the cringy awkwardness of being a young teen.
I was already an adult in 2008 so I can't relate to being an awkward teen navigating the early years of social media, but I'm sure my life would have been a lot more stressful if social media existed in my teen years. Unfortunately I can't even identify the chat client he was using.
After watching the movie I felt like he made the movie as an apology to his mother for being a dick when he was a teenager. It takes a humble, introspective guy to portray himself being a jerk to his friends and family. But boy, I was rooting for him to get just one win in that summer of pain.
I first found out about the movie when I read an article about the movie being made in Fremont by a guy from Fremont. I've never lived there but I spend a lot time there because of friends who live there. Aside from the specific locations that locals will recognize, the most recognizable look of Fremont is in the outdoor scenes where you see glimpses of the golden hills in the background. The shape of Fremont is a long, thin city with the hills to the east, so most of Fremont has the hills as a backdrop.
Some of you film buffs may be familiar with the story of Charlie Chaplin making some legendary movies in Niles Canyon in the Bay Area. Well, Niles Canyon is nestled within those golden hills and is now part of the city of Fremont. So there's actually film-making history here!

Still in theatre at the moment. Not a ton of showings from what I could see.
Only had one showing at 2:30 Pm on a Monday for me in my area.

Dune 2 and Didi are my top 2 so far. I wish this had gotten a wider release because it deserves so much more attention. I hope it gets some Oscar recognition. The relatable references to coming of age in the dawn of social media were too many to count because he perfectly captured it. From the AIM chat to the top friends list on MySpace.
Like a poster mentioned above, this movie was clearly made for his mother and it made me want to call mine after I finished. I think my favorite part was when his skateboard friends called him out on how he treated his mom. It was the last thing you would expect after what we had seen from them so far and how they treated him. I felt so happy for the mom when someone finally showed a genuine appreciation for her art.
A cool little fact: Sean Wang’s real grandmother plays Nai Nai in the movie. Both her and Sean’s maternal grandmother star in a short documentary film that he directed called Nai Nai and Wai Po. It was nominated for an Oscar last year. It’s only 17 minutes and a nice tribute to them. Streaming on Disney+.

Watched this last night. Talk about a blast from the past. I was a little older than the kid in the movie, going into senior year the summer of 08 but it was still all very relatable to going into high school in 05. The MySpace top 8, and typing something up on AIM just to think about it and delete it. Also getting someone to call so somebody can hear your ringtone
. I don’t remember aim being around that late I seem to remember it being pretty much over with around 06 but could be wrong
Definitely one of the movies of the year which isn’t tough this year. I’ve seen a lot and don’t know how the hell I’d make a top 5
