Yes! That's probably the best comparison, the cringy awkwardness of being a young teen.

I was already an adult in 2008 so I can't relate to being an awkward teen navigating the early years of social media, but I'm sure my life would have been a lot more stressful if social media existed in my teen years. Unfortunately I can't even identify the chat client he was using.

After watching the movie I felt like he made the movie as an apology to his mother for being a dick when he was a teenager. It takes a humble, introspective guy to portray himself being a jerk to his friends and family. But boy, I was rooting for him to get just one win in that summer of pain.


I first found out about the movie when I read an article about the movie being made in Fremont by a guy from Fremont. I've never lived there but I spend a lot time there because of friends who live there. Aside from the specific locations that locals will recognize, the most recognizable look of Fremont is in the outdoor scenes where you see glimpses of the golden hills in the background. The shape of Fremont is a long, thin city with the hills to the east, so most of Fremont has the hills as a backdrop.

Some of you film buffs may be familiar with the story of Charlie Chaplin making some legendary movies in Niles Canyon in the Bay Area. Well, Niles Canyon is nestled within those golden hills and is now part of the city of Fremont. So there's actually film-making history here!

Still in theatre at the moment. Not a ton of showings from what I could see.

Only had one showing at 2:30 Pm on a Monday for me in my area.

Watched this last night. Talk about a blast from the past. I was a little older than the kid in the movie, going into senior year the summer of 08 but it was still all very relatable to going into high school in 05. The MySpace top 8, and typing something up on AIM just to think about it and delete it. Also getting someone to call so somebody can hear your ringtone . I don’t remember aim being around that late I seem to remember it being pretty much over with around 06 but could be wrong

Definitely one of the movies of the year which isn’t tough this year. I’ve seen a lot and don’t know how the hell I’d make a top 5
