For those unaware

Will never happen. Not a chance in hell.

Taxing unrealized gains is without hyperbole the most insane economic policy in the history of this country and would destroy our markets, businesses, and economy.
It's mind-blowing that people suggest it and/or think it's a "good idea". Even if they start with the ultra wealthy you know it wouldn't be long before they come for all of us.
ETA: To illustrate my point think of the small businessman (or woman!) who is trying to grow their business and paying themselves just enough to survive. Their tax bill if the business grows in value would put them negative for the year in terms of income.

That's what people said about a black president. It happened.
They're coming for your retirement funds and private property.

You should've included the part where this law only applies to households worth $100+ million for transparency. The law is still just as dumb but the way u have it posted now is kinda dishonest

Even if you aren't that plan would totally frick the stock market. It would create tons of forced selling by some of the largest shareholders.

Didn't say I agree with it. It is, however, highly unlikely it will affect OP.

Ok.
But it's not going to happen.

What if those unrealized gains are used as collateral against a favorable loan of large proportions?
That specific scenario is the only one in which it could make any sense.

what's next, allowing mortgage companies to add " unrealized gains" to your principle?

Give it time.
Communist revolutions tend to happen relatively overnight. I guarantee that the populations of those countries never thought it would happen.
The canary in the coal mine is the 2nd amendment. If that ever goes, everything is fair game.

So if you own a bunch of Microsoft stock and executives are forced to dump a bunch after a good year that doesn't impact you? It's a moronic idea.

do you really think they started taxing everyone 35.0% overnight?
No, that would be ludicrous and start riots. But.. introduce it slowly, and look around.

The stock market has been a sham for years now. There's a reason folks like Nancy Pelosi make bank off it.
When shite like gamestop happens it becomes apparent that any money we make off of it is just happenstance

I said this law is stupid. Just think it's also dumb of OP to make the members of the OT that don't know better think this will also apply to them. It isn't like it's gonna sway the election in Louisiana either way so why cause some random OTer unneeded stress on the opening day of College Football
