Piled into my ‘79 Honda Civic with two of my best buddies and hit the road from BR to Biloxi on August 20, 1989. It was a Sunday and we were each in our early 20s. What a day to be alive for young metal fans.

We were on the floor and down near the front for the show. Easily a top-five concert for me and my all-time favorite Metallica show. Had seen them at UNO Lakefront the previous January but were relegated to the stands to the right of the stage, part of the reason I preferred Biloxi.

Watch the Seattle 1989 Binge and Purge concert and you’ll see pretty much what we saw on stage that night. Best of my memory, the crowd in Biloxi was pretty damn similar as well to the one in that concert video.

They went on to become even bigger, but I swear I don’t know if they’ve ever been more of a force on stage than they were on that tour. Just an amazing show. Remarkable in every possible way.

ETA:
So my son sent me a youtube link last night. Not video but it’s a bunch of still shots from this very show in Biloxi. Love this. Wish there was some video out there somewhere but this is super cool.

Also, I guaranteed him that one of the arms raised in this pic is mine. The only way that isn’t true is if my arms were both down when it was snapped. I was right in this area the entire show.

Metallica in the 80's wasn't a band. They were a machine. As the previous poster said, watch Seattle 89, Live shite Bing & Purge. Quite possibly the greatest metal show ever filmed. Complete & utter destruction.

I'm jealous as frick. In '89, they would have been touring in support of And Justice for All, one of my favorites from them.

The more that time passes, the more awesome it is to consider what Metallica was doing throughout the '80s.

I watch that Seattle concert alot and show my kids how awesome it was. AND NO CELL PHONES....just rock!

But I saw that same show in Jackson and it still is awesome to think about.

I am so fortunate to remember going to concerts with no cell phones. There is no fear like losing your friends at a massive concert when no one has a phone.

I love to watch live official released concerts but its sad to see the thousands of phones up in the air the whole show.

/get off my lawn.

That show in Jackson was incredible .... The Cult opening with Steve Jones on guitar made for a special evening.

The fact that they are still touring, at a pretty damn high level still, is amazing.

Watching that Seattle concert I was like, how the hell do they have the stamina to perform like that all concert? Much less all tour? How the hell does Hetfield even still have a voice? I felt exhausted just watching them.

Saw them in '92 w/ GNR at the Superdome.
Metallica was clearly QB1 that night.

I was, as well. The Cult opened (also a favorite of mine). Great show.
