patio obviously hot AF during south LA summer. The patio is under roof with non-insulated attic space above. Anyone done this before? Was wondering if adding blown in cellulose insulation to the attic above would have any impact on temps/comfort during the heat of summer?

I'm no expert in thermodynamics but my guess is that would not help even a little bit. You're still outside. The moist air is just hot as frick down here and if you're outside the only options are shade and moving air around you with a fan (and I guess a misting system?). Insulating the attic when you aren't in an air conditioned space seems pointless.

But shite, I'd love to be wrong here!

this was kinda my thought process as well. My only question is with the attic being 120 degrees or whatever obnoxiously hot temp it is up there, is that impacting the temp of the patio at all. I'm with you though, the answer is probably not much if any.

I have/had the same situation but have a reverse take - the only thing "blocking" air flow/temperature into my attic on my patio is the vinyl siding ceiling. In my opinion, that is a free pass for hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter to infiltrate my entire attic space.

Given that I have HVAC ductwork running only a couple of feet away from the vinyl ceiling, I chose to insulate it myself.

Does it make any difference on my patio?....probably not..Does it make any difference on my summer HVAC ductwork.....maybe.....Does it make any difference on my HVAC ductwork in the winter.....definitely.

I had to replace my ceiling on my back porch and when I did, I did spray foam between the rafters before installing new bead board. It is a bronze aluminum roof over a porch covered on 3 sides. I believe it made a decent difference but I didn't measure air temp.

Is your attic hotter than the outside air temperature on a summer day? Yes

Will insulating your patio ceiling cause you to eliminate more or less heat from the attic? Less

So it will hurt you in the summer, though not sure how much.

In the winter, it will help, though for the same reason. What will the net be? Hard to say, it would be directly related to the temperature differentials,

What’s impacting the temp of your patio more: Your patio ceiling or the out of doors?

By patio do you mean outdoors?

I will likely help in the summer but not for the traditional insulation use. The insulation will block the radiant heat from the roof and keep whatever ceiling you have over the patio from getting hot hot hot and radiating that heat down.

In certain circumstances it could make a huge difference in comfort when sitting outside.

Pointless? I don't think so. As a matter of fact I'm prepared to do this on mine. I've got the insulation ready just waiting on cooler temps. The point is to keep the radiant heat from radiating down onto my screened in porch. It's a low ceiling with no barrier keeping that hot arse roof from emanating heat downward.
