Looking at Croatia for next year’s vacation. How is the food?

One of my favorite things about traveling is going out to eat and experiencing the local culture through dinning. How is the food in Croatia?

Food is awesome assuming you enjoy seafood. It's up there with Italy as far as best I've had in Europe. Some places in SE Asia would also go high on my list. The culture and experience around food is one of my top reasons for traveling too.

Split had the best food of where we went.
Go to croatia. You will fall in love.
I've been to almost every country in europe...Spain is my favorite to visit; croatia would be where I live.

Very good food, lots of great seafood and pasta. The area over history has been taken over by neighboring countries many times. So they have that influence on some of their cuisine. For example the pizza and pasta is very good from when the Venetian's controlled the area.
Lots of squid and black ink risotto.

As others have said food is excellent. If you go to Split, Dvor was one of my favorite restaurants on the trip.

What is about Croatia that would make you pick it? Never been but I'm planning on going.

I enjoyed my week there and plan to go back in the future. Much I didn't see.
Some selected photos from a trip we took a few years ago.

Every place we went to eat I'd ask the waiter "order me what you'd get" and it was some of the most fantastic food I'd never have ordered myself.
A few orders of squid, black ink risotto, various pasta, gnocchi and wonderful salt baked whole fish and grilled whole fish. Croatian white wine is also cheap and very good. Most of the Croatian red was ok. I'm not a big white drinker and that's what i drank the most on our trip.
Also, all of the pizza we got was excellent. Italian influence for sure coming across the Adriatic sea.
Beautiful country with some friendly people. 95% of the people i encountered in 7 different cities all spoke English well enough, so no language barrier.

Plenty of fresh seafood all around. We tried to eat peka, the national dish, but struck out. You have to order it the day before b/c of the slow cooking.
I have recs for places to eat in Dubrovnik, Split, and Vis, if you want them.

Just went this summer. Dubrovnik, Hvar, Split, Plitvice then on to Slovenia. I’ll second everyone’s comments. Buck Dancer is right on. Get the Black Risotto. It’s amazing. Fresh fish and more fish. Great Pizza.
I’ll add a couple of my favorite other items:
Blitva - side dish of potato and chard
The burrata cheese is amazing
Dalmatian prosciutto
Malvasija white wine - cheap and great
Had a great seafood bouillabaisse in Dubrovnik
Croatia is not a beer country but I couldn’t stop drinking Ozujsko Limon shandy. Mid summer heat on a boat it’s hard to beat.
Shout out to Nole Man whose recs helped make my trip - particularly Slovenia. Kobarid and surrounds were amazing.

Oh yeah that reminds me - Bosnia is really close so either day trip (we went to Mostar totally worth it) or find a Bosnian restaurant. Both Dubrovnik and Split have some. Bosnian food is fantastic - similar to Turkish. More meat heavy with flat breads and condiments. One of our best meals. Try Cevapa or Cevapcici (sp?) little pieces of grill meat shaped like link sausages. And Bosnia is CHEAP. Not on the Euro but they’ll take them.

We had the same experience on our Croatian trip. Had eaten seafood in Dubrovnik every night and when we went to Mostar we wanted Bosnian food. Had a fantastic lunch with those sausages, wife had a couple glasses of wine and I had a beer and it was around $25.
We are going back to Croatia in two weeks and doing a couple days in Montenegro, and taking a quick detour in Trebinje Bosnia for the cevapi for lunch along the way.

A mix of many euro countries, cheaper, great food and wine, incredibly beautiful, and incredibly beautiful women.

Ok, now. A little thread hijack. Or start a new trip report. Need to hear about that!

We leave a week from tomorrow. Landing in Rome and taking a flight to Dubrovnik. Couple days there, then driving to Tivat, Montenegro for two nights. The scenery around bay of Kotor is gorgeous. We are doing a boat trip of the bay. Then drive/ferry to Korcula. Back to Rome from Dubrovnik and drive to Siena.

Does this still hold true? Is it one of the cheaper European countries to travel to?

I can't remember the name but there is a really good Bosnian resturant right in the heart of Dubrovnik. Want to go back and do a stop over in Bosnia now.
